Top shelf is subject to opinion as far as strains are concerned.

Any strain can be grown in a top shelf manner (ie any strain can be masterfully grown to it's full potential but as far as the strains themselves go you could think something is great that others would think is crap.

Do you want something top shelf as in something everyone has heard of? Ie og kush. White widow. Granddaddy purple? Purple kush. Etc etc

Or top shelf like something not commonly.found on the streets (ie. Head stash pure sativa?)

If it were me I say screw what's popular top shelf. Grow something you can't get anywhere. Also look for cup winners. It doesn't mean only good strains win but it's a safe way to play it. Especially.ones that have ranked up multiple wins over a decade plus

Have you tried Humboldt's bubba before? How does it stack up to the original bubba

Not sure how it compares to the original bubba as it is the only bubba I have grown. But it is one of my favorites, and I am more of a sativa guy. I grew the regs, not fems. I am not sure if that matters. I have one I am going to chop today, I will try and post pics in the humboldt thread. I already have pics up of a different pheno in that thread.

This is the most subjective question ever... For instance, I don't care for any of the three strains TheHermit suggested.

I avoid "cup winners". My experiences is, they are bad strains that the breeders pay a lot of money to get the judges to vote for and you get bullshit from seeds.

I would think there's exceptions. Ak47 from serious immediately comes to mind.

Yeah if you look for cup winners from greenhouse seeds then you're asking for trouble. However there's many strains that routinely win cups because they're just that good.

The guy asked a pretty general question so that was my best general answer.

I tend to do lots of research on a good portion of what I buy personally and winning a cup isnt a prerequisite for me at all.

Yeah I know it's subjective I'm just looking to see what people proven favorites were.

Everyones taste and preferences are obv different. Just trying to get some ideas for my order

If you're looking for "Top shelf" Like real A+ Clone only type smoke pick and mix isn't the way to go. Finding a strain that has the potential and buying packs, multiple, and pheno hunting then cloning that plant forever is how you get the special plant

DO NOT HAVE EXPECTATIONS TO FIND CLONE ONLY QUALITY FROM SEED. It's not realistic and will lead to you being disappointed.

Gage, HSO, Bodhi, DNA, Breeders Boutique are a few breeders that put out good product that I have experience with

I agree with Mr head for the most part except the dont expect to find clone only quality in seeds. I think you just need to pheno hunt. Like the legendary cherry pheno of the ak47 from serious. You generally need a pack or two to find it. Then you clone that special pheno as Mr nice said

I should have said every seed.

Of course you can find clone only quality in seed, it's how every plant starts :)

With all this said I've got some pretty awesome seeds from freebies, just single seeds that have turned out quite well. Better then a lot of stuff I paid for. It's really down to luck. The more quality seeds you grow out the more chance there is at finding something special.

I agree completely. I've gotten lucky a couple times via pick n mix. Like for instance none of the original.amnesia smoke reports (dinafem) I've come across talk about it being super portent etc but the one I had 2 years back via pick n mix was a 1 hitter quitter.

I think I just got lucky n got a good pheno. Of course I didn't clone it tho :-/

A good example of finding a gem in a pack for me would be finding the starburst smelling super duper fast flowering white berry from paradise. Also didn't clone it but I had mostly cloudy trichs at day 42 only problem was I was anticipating a 50 day flowering period and I try to give it no nutes for the last 10+ days and had a few more to go. That same pheno smelled just like starburst. It was highly impressive. Buds were even more dense than the other phenos as well. You could pick it out of a line up

Mr. Head beat me to it, but yeah thinking you'll find a clone only type plant from a pick and mix, or a single bean or two, is like me thinking I could beat Lebron James in a b-ball game after a year of practice. It could happen but 99.99999999999999999% of the time, it ain't.

I like to buy at least a pack or two when I search a strain for a certain phenotype but sometimes it takes many more packs than that.

Schematics to the side, if you want the top notch strain then just buy what ever seed cost the most, right? LOL.

Sorry, not much help but some of those gg#4 crosses aren't looking to shabby.

Also. Let's not forget about what you're actually buying. If it's just a simple f1 cross then many packs are required. The further along the chain you get or even ibl's the more likely you are to get a winner in one pack

I hear ya, I'm deff paying the lottery, but who's seeds are a best bet to play the lottery on.

I'd rather grow 100 single seeds of different strains that 100 seeds of a few strains. I like variety. And the way I see it if you grow out the same number of seeds pick n mix our by the pack your odds are about the same to find a keeper, 1 in 20 seeds or so... So why not enjoy a variety along the way
