Tobacco Seeds For Less Than A Buck!

Thanks for the info. Shayden and Whiteflour-- next season I'll be growing tobacco. I can't wait!

Buzzpopper, it's a Chinese camellia sinensis-- and I actually inherited the tree after the unexpected death of my mom in '09. Gardening was her life and she collected plants from around the world-- had some really rare and exotic stuff. She had multiple greenhouses, and my dad didn't know what to do with all the plants, as he has a black thumb. So I went to my parents house and took almost an entire greenhouse worth of plants back to my own-- I had to rent a U-haul! My green thumb, and all my knowledge of gardening and plants was because of her. She used the website Dave's Garden, and traded with people globally-- that's how she acquired that tea tree.

Sorry for the long post-- got a little nostalgic. But I did find a site that sells them:

Sorry as well for hijacking your thread MP. Cheers guys.

Thank you so much for that info. Im in zone 13 so growing anything here other than cactus is quite a challenge. Daves garden is an awesome website.

Yeah, zone 13 would be a challenge for a tea tree-- and most anything else. I'm guessing that's Central or South America, as the southern parts of the U.S. are zone 10. I thought it was hot where I live! That site was also just selling seeds, so you'd have quite a wait before you could actually use the leaves. Good luck bud.

Zone 13 was in parts of the American Southwest also or it used to be according to USDA back in the late 70s early 80s. Dry arid and next to no rainfall. I looked thanks to your comment and saw that I was reclassified in 1990 to 9b. I saw Arabica beans on that site and I know it takes 4 years to grow from seed to productive fruit producing plant. I was thinking that would be cool in an atrium or greenhouse.

It was 115 today.

200 Nicotania Tabacum seeds for $1... sounds like the bag is a touch light to me. Did they at least tell you what strain it is???

The seller probably buys paks of seed from J.L. Hudson Seedsman, Victory Seeds, or Riemers for $2.50 per pack with 1500 - 2500 seeds, then "steps on it" repacked in smaller qty, and resells it.

J.L. Hudson old timery seedsman is my go to supplier. http://www.jlhudsonseeds.net/SeedlistN.htm I highly recomend buying at least gram of seed, triple vac bagging, and bury it somewhere just in case...

Jumbo Stalk Black Mammoth {cigar wrapper leaf} is shade grown, and has 3ft long giant leaves. I had one that got infested with aphids... all the aphids were DEAD. It would be a great companion plant in a grow room, in the corner.. in the shade. It would execute various bugs as effectively as a Chinese prison handles environmentalists and other political prisoners.

this is prolly a stupid Q
but is it illegal to grow tabacco in the US

and what type of conditions does it need
You can grow 1/10th of an acre. Burley {Ciggarette} and Havana {Cigar Filler} take full sun. Cigar Wrapper is shade grown, mostly in Connecticut. {Fuentes was the first to grow his own wrapper... Castro probly still gets Connecticut wrapper}

From what I have heard it sucks all the nurtients and goodness from your soil. It is a HUGE nute hog. So much so, that some say it destroys the soil. It would be a great plant to get rid of used nute solution.

Until I started this thread, I had no idea how cheap they were - nor how tiny.

All I know is that they're some kind of Havana.

I've got a bunch inside germ box, so once they've popped and are ready to go outside, I'll be planting them in the full Florida sun. It sounds like that's one of the few plants I'm growing that can actually take it.

Plus, I've got a big ant problem all of the sudden, so hopefully it'll help.

I grew a few tobacco plants in the past year and they turned out great. I smoked mine out of a fine wooden pipe made of cherry.

This sounds like it would be a really interesting plant to grow. How does it compare with other tobacco? I imagine its the best considering its home grown, but is it Harsher than regular tobacco? personally i smoke cigarettes so I am curious if it rolls up nicely into a zig-zag or is better for cigars and what not

Burley Tobacco IS cigarette tobacco. So it should compare very close to what your smoking. As with our favorite herb..... curing has a lot to do with smoothness of smoke. :joint:

My reason for growing has more to do as a plant to attract and EXECUTE pests like aphids, mites etc.

i've grown it for a couple years now. I've never smoked it but if i rub a leaf when it's mature i'll get a head rush and have to sit down for a couple minutes
