Tiny plants?

Hey everyone, I am working with limited space, and I got some questions.

I'm pretty much just getting my feet wet with all this, so I'm not planning on growing some 3'+ plant. I have a small space, and limited lighting I can secure in that area. I'm working with 2 (possibly 3) plants.

I wanted to know what is the earliest I could try and flower them? I'm not in a rush, I just want tiny plants. At about what height? How would I trim (or light) a plant so that it grows more stocky and wide, than tall? I also have only one grow space, so I can't have a main plant on a 18/6 light schedule and clones on a 12/12. If I flower three right near each other, could it be possible to identify the males before they pollinate the females? If it turns out that only one is female, then I might focus on letting that one plant get bigger. I also saw two tiny little black bugs w/ wings the other day, I killed them, and haven't seen any more since.

Thanks in advance!

reading the FAQ is invaluable but here are some basics
If youre going for short plants then send them into flowing at around 6-8" tall. Somewhere around 4-5weeks hopefully. They should nearly triple in size during flowering. trimming the top of plants makes them bush out, 2 shoots grow from 1 cut etc. But everytime you cut the plant it stresses and takes time to recover. Its widely recommended not to prune once flowering has started. As far as lighting goes, you need 18+ hours for vegging and clones, then cut back to 12/12 for flowering. Also try using cool white bulbs (blue spectrum) for vegging and cloning (grows good roots and keeps them short between internodes) and warm white bulbs for flowering ( red spectrum) or a mix of both. Maybe lean towards a little more cool white light during flowering if youre wanting to keep them short. It is definetly possible to send them into flowering then sex them, but keep a close eye on them and get the males out of the house ASAP (less than 1 week max.) unless you want the female to produce seeds.
Hopefully some of this made sense. i was going back and adding info as i was typing it. Also its worth mentioning that im only on my 2nd grow and all this info is from COUNTLESS hours reading sites like this.

^^ Thanks! I just read the FAQ on topping (I missed it when looking before). I actually wouldn't mind if there were some seeds produced, as then I'd have some for the next time (again, no space for cloning). How common is a male anyway? I like 1:4?

I would have read up more before starting this, but everything just came together very quickly!

triple in size ... so something say 6" would jump to 1' 1/2 ? what would a plant such as this yield ? quarter ? maybe more ? also trimming the tops makes them bush out but causes stress ? so is it really worth it to trim if youve got a short plant ?

cheers

your choice as far as trimming goes. I would say no. Just cut a few lower leaves if they turn yellow but other than that i would just leave them be
