Time Waits For No One · The Rolling Stones

I stumbled across a YouTube clip in which 2 guys decided to make separate lists of their top 10 favorite Rolling Stones records, and then they taped themselves comparing their lists and commenting on their choices. It was interesting and light-hearted. Most of the songs were famous and obvious. Both their lists had “Gimme Shelter” at number one – I can’t disagree with that, although I might have chosen something else (maybe “Salt of the Earth”) if I were inclined to play the game, which I’m not.

But one of them mentioned something I’d never even heard of: “Time Waits For No One” from the album “It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll”. (I’m not familiar with that album other than the songs that either got top 40 airplay, or turned up on the “GRRR!” anthology). And the guy who included it on his list mentioned how good Mick Taylor’s guitar solo is on the outro jam.

So of course I had to check it out. This is the last album Taylor made with the band, before he quit and was replaced by Ronnie Wood. Taylor was the most accomplished lead guitarist the band ever had. (I know from interviews I’ve read that Keith Richards would agree with that statement.) If you’re familiar with “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” from “Sticky Fingers”, you know what I mean. His playing on this one reminds me, at times, of Carlos Santana, in terms of both phrasing and tone.

According to Wikipedia, they never played this song live. So this studio recording is the only version.

So here’s a link. 6 minutes 38 seconds. Maybe some of you have already been familiar with this thing, but it was a real discovery for me to hear it. I’m glad I’m not deaf yet. Taylor’s outro solo kicks in at the 3 minute 40 second mark.

That's their last great album in my mind and has some really good deep cuts you would never hear in a playlist because they have so many classic tracks.
But Keef and Jagger screwed Mick Taylor on a lot of songwriting credits on the albums he was on. Hell of a soulful guitarist.
