Thrips: What to do when nothing is working?

Hi all,
I've been a lurker for a bit but first time poster (of my own thread), sorry for the long-ish read.
Here's a summarized version in case you don't want to read it all (sorry about the book of a post). I'm having a hard time dealing with the slightest thrip issue ever and I am hoping for some guidance. Three Citric Acid foliars and one Baking soda and neem w/soap have not successfully eradicated them.
---
I have two tents running right now 4x4 and 2x4 and both are having a thrip issue that I cannot clear up. So far I have only really seen a handful of thrips, always less than 5 on a plant in the 4x4 and even less in the 2x4.

They only popped up about two weeks ago when I harvested from the 4x4 and moved the 2x4 ladies up and closed down my 2x2 moving them all to the 2x4. I have since inspected my harvest and no thrips were on them.

I just started flowering the 4x4 when two days in my fiance was checking out the tent and asked whats that 'snail trail' looking stuff on some of the leaves? I said eh I probably got them wet when feeding.. I was wrong.. I checked them all out and low and behold I had thrips. When I looked here and google I find most people end up with infestations much more severe than mine, I have only seen very few.

I try to stay as organic as possible with my girls, I grow in ffhf/of 60/40 blend, I feed the full biobizz lineup, I do not foliar feed. So I was hoping to find a remedy that fit with the organic theme.

Searching here I found Citric Acid mentioned often, Spinosad, neem, and then more aggressive chemicals. Searching google I found mentioning of Baking Soda with neem and/or dish soap. I also read it is a good idea to defoliate taking the most affected leaves if possible.

First I went back to 16/8 to buy myself time, I was only two days in 12/12 so no issues there.
Then I defoliated the plants, not a bad thing as I was planning to more or less lollipop them (the day I found the thrips) anyway as I did just start flower and I set out blue traps.
Next I tried the citric acid foliar first at a concentration of 2tsp/q, then at 3tsp/q.
After the first spray through I did not see another thrip until two days later which motivated the second spraying.
I did three applications applying every other day and allowing to dry before turning lights back on as I was still seeing them (lights out is during the day when I'm not around so had to do it this way).
I was sure to spray plant from dirt to tips, meaning not actually spraying the soil but the plant stem from the bottom all the way to the top, getting tops and bottoms of all leaves thoroughly as I went through every plant individually.
I also did a cinnamon scratch into my soil and then a cinnamon topping as it can kill the larvae of most insects and I wanted to make sure if they were in the soil or dropping into it I had that covered too. I have used cinnamon this way for over a year as a preventative measure against fungus gnats (I used to over water)

After the third treatment I was still seeing thrips, this time right after turning lights back on I spotted one just walking around a top side leave like "mmm sour patch weed".. and although it has only been one or two (that I am seeing) on one or two plants (out of 9) I feel like I have to get rid of them completely before going into flower or I will regret it.

Yesterday I culled one of the plants, a vintage blueberry from AKBB because she just was not recovering how the others did from the citric acid foliars. I have cuts but one less plant to run unfortunately assuming I can even get these girls to the point I am comfortable trying to start flower again.
I then hit them with water with 1tbsp baking soda, 1tsp neem and a few pumps of dish soap. I checked this morning and already saw a thrip on one plant.

I am hoping to hear I have done everything right to this point and it's not me I just ended up with apocalypse proof thrips..

I am also hoping for any suggestions that will help as they have now also started popping up in my 2x4 (not much of a surprise as they are right next to each other).

If I have to I am not opposed to resetting (culling them all), I have cuts of all. It would just be a waste of the time and effort already put into them so w/e. I am more concerned about not losing everything more specifically my cuts and 'living vault' as I have a few strains I do not have seeds for.

Besides for the 2x4 I also have two trays of rooted cuts that I need to cup up sooner than later but don't want to throw them in with thrips, that just seems idiotic.
--
Last question, should I even be bothered by this? Is there a chance once I start to flower that the temps and humidity will run them out? I run LED and my tents tend to run hot (high 80's-mid 90's) especially during summer, I have been doing my best to follow some VPD charts which usually put me between 60-70% humidity..

Please help,
GanjaGuy

Citric acid spray

2-3 teaspoons of citric acid powder mixed into 1 litre of water.

spray until you see no more as iT’s a contact killer.

Just make sure you test spray first before fully spraying the plant.

I tried all sorts of shit , and never got rid of them when i had this issue, it would break my heart watching my babies getting destroyed by these putrid fuckers, i hated them so much, in the end the only way i got rid of them was to finish my grows clean and sterilized absolutely everything , vaccum every nook and cranny and put bitch stockings over my intake vents...and never had an issue since, I'M very sure it all started when buying a pot plant for the kitchen not knowing how bad of a mistake that would be.

I went through the same issue for 3 + weeks.

All of them are outside now.

Cleaning the tents, vacuuming every nook.

Starting fresh.

Not sure if you have the option to grow outside.

But the bugs and bees and spiders fid a number on the thrips.

Could try putting them outside for a week and see if you notice any thrips afterwards. Then bring them back in.

I tried the Citric acid they kept coming back after a few days, even after spraying every 2 days 4 times consecutively.

Maybe with nematodes and spraying so you get the larva and the ones on the plant as well.

I used sulphur smoke bombs on them 1 every 3-4 days x3 to break the egg larvae adult cycle mentioned above they put a swift end to them.

I appreciate the replies!
So far I’ve done citric acid at 3tsp/q three times (every other day) and once with baking soda 3tsp/q and neem with soap, I’m not sure the plants will make it through 14+ days of citric acid every other day, like I mentioned one already had to be culled but if that’s the best option..
Ive watched a thrip just walk through the citric acid water like ‘that all ya got”..
It’s like they’re resistant, but I guess all I have is time, I’m already 10 days in at this point..

how likely do you think it is they’ll come back down the road?

Edit: so far I’ve only seen what appear to be 1st stage larvae, basically tiny little peach-ish colored grains of rice that are b*tches

Very likely. Do you know the source? Like castings or compost maybe?

There were a handful of possibilities.. sorry I tend to be long worded, I anticipate a lot of tldr’s

I brought clones in (for the first time) 1-2 months ago. - this doesn’t make sense to me though because they went from my cloner (which I’m guessing are safe due to high rh) to my 2x2, to my 2x4 and eventually the 4x4 before showing any signs of an issue. also would they sit dormant that long? At the same time I noticed that the place I bought them soon after showed no slips (I bought unroofed) available, I messaged asking about it and they said they were moving facilities but clones never went down? I wondered if they had an infestation. Mine had trouble/took a long time to root compared to my own cuts (nearly double/triple the time).

After my harvest i deep clean the tent before moving up the next run. Removing tent liner, exhaust cloth pre-filter, etc - possibly disturbed something that went on the plants as soon as I moved them up? I checked all of the harvested plants while hanging and found no signs of thrips on them though..

I have recently (last 2-4 weeks) been taking cuts from my plants as I was prepping to move them up to flower and with that I’ve bought and brought in 3 aloe plants from HD (I can only find small size plants recently), maybe one of them was infected.. - problem with this is none of them seem to show any sign of infestation and neither of my cloners have thrips in them.

I’ve switched where I get my soil, in an attempt to support my local shop that just opened, I started buying there instead of online. The day I went in for blue traps while talking about my thrip issue he goes “I’m always fighting some bug issue in here”.. - I was like, you don’t say..

However dumb this may sound to some I think I manifested them..

Hear me out.. I’ve been on here and other forums/sm reading about all sorts of bug issues and a few weeks ago I saw one and I was like ‘I’m so happy I’ve never had a bug problem’ to myself and boom.. less than a week later, thrips.. fickle karma

Are you using dry amendments and castings or bottled nutes?

I currently feed the full biobizz na line with a strong desire to get off the bottle. I am happy with my results but feel like better options are in my future. You can’t improve if you don’t try something new. I have been looking at knf or dry amend but haven’t committed one way or another and am limited in some ways (I rent and don’t really have space to cook soils or knf batches that my fiancé would agree to)

You don't need to cook soil if you do no till. It's also easier to keep a population of predator insects.

If you can point me to something to read or some personal suggestions I’m all ears/eyes! I was under the assumption I would need to amend my soil and let it cook before using it, then from there it would be toppings or teas and plain water throughout the grow.

also thank you
@simpleleaf and @lusidghost

Today is day one with no thrips found on any plants.. plants look like hell but also like they could recover. Time will tell, appreciate everyone!

emulsify the neem in the dish soap before mixing it in with the water then apply thoroughly with a mister to tops and bottoms of leaves. stop treating when you get bud formation that would be too dense for foliar spraying.

best of luck!
:peace:

dig in to the soil threads in the organics forum. cooking and supersoil are a slightly older method; you can mix soil up not as hot and get going with no till asap, espescially if you plan on ammending and feeding teas etc. plain water is never plain anyhow and its always good to support your microbe herd somehow so if you can get into tea making its pretty good way to maintain a good microbiotic culture in your soil. Search for the ROLS thread if you want to go that way.
