I can tell between amber and clear and/or cloudy by eye, I can't distinguish between clear and just cloudy by eye however.

Also requires the right light.

to a certain degree yes you can see the trichs but not individually. as the plant nears its peak maturity you will notice how the buds will change in color. over time you will be able to tell if the plant is ready without using a scope.

Yes under daylight (blue spectrum) lights clear trichs will shine like diamonds, when they go milky they lose that luster and to not refract light.

No the cloudiness from a larger representative view you would have to have the aid of a microscope and they are really cheap. If you live in America Radio Shack has them for under $15.
