Thought hubby ruined my grow but maybe he did me a favor

Earlier this year, I started a grow with three seeds I got at a dispensary (all the same strain). Just a week or two into veg, I had to go out of state very suddenly (and for a long time, it turned out) because my father was dying. Hubby said he would take over for me, and I wrote out some very explicit instructions including links to this site and lots of pictures. I explained everything to him as well and asked him questions along the way to make sure he understood.

Here's proof that men never listen to women: He totally screwed it up. He didn't catch the signs that two of the three plants were male. So what happened? The boys exploded with pollen all over everything. I told him to turn off the lights and I'd deal with things when I got home. I have no idea how long after it happened that he told me about it.

I was so disgusted when I finally got home that I couldn't even go look at the mess. I knew I'd have to sanitize every square centimeter of the grow tent. So about five months have passed since he turned off the lights.

To make a long story short, today I decided to clean the tent. There's pollen everywhere. I started cutting down the plants to throw them away, and then I started looking at the lone female. She's covered in seeds. I started harvesting them; I already have about 900 and I'm not finished. I assume that these seeds will be viable. Is that right? I'm worried that they were just left to sit there without being harvested or watched for temperature and humidity. I've started a few to see if they germinate, but they all look healthy. I'm only taking the ones that are a nice dark color and are large and unblemished. I should get a mix of male and females from these seeds, correct? I have absolutely no idea what to expect. I'm very new at growing.

Anyway, I think that hubby might have actually done me a big favor (if you forget about all the sterilizing I have to do). But I'm not going to congratulate him just yet. Am I good? Or did I just waste a lot of time picking out hundreds of seeds?

Well...Maybe not exactly a favor, but he did give you a second chance! Seed viability depends on how long they developed before the plant died. The seeds you are starting will tell you the story. You should know soon enough. Good luck on round two!

I can't see any reason they wouldn't be viable. Stick 10 or so in a paper towel and see if they germinate.

Thanks! My fingers are crossed so tight they're purple. :-)

I compared them to seeds I got from the dispensary, and they look the same. Same size and color. I don't know if that means anything, though...

I would be embarrassed and disgusted in myself if I had done something like this. Cripes, my girlfriend is ace when it comes to managing my crops when I travel on business.

I'd bust his nuts and never let on that something good came from it ;)

If he thinks that his lack of care isn't important, he won't be diligent next time either. Trust me... I'm a male. I know these things. If I caught my kitchen on fire because I wasn't paying attention, yet my girl was kind of happy that I killed the mouse that periodically visits from smoke inhalation, there's no motivation to watch the oven next time either.

Just a bit of helpful information..ya I would use a rag to get most of the visible pollen..but cannabis pollen germinates within three days and if it hadn't attached to a pistil by then it is no longer viable...you would have about a 1 percent chance after 6 months of even getting one bean from that pollen :) didn't need to worry about sanitizing really..never hurts though, who knows what bugs made their way in in those 6 months

Thank you so much for this! I was really worried about the pollen contaminating everything. I will wash everything down, but I won't be so worried about making everything hospital-grade sanitary. :-)

Too funny. :-) I just hope I never have to leave him in charge again. He *did* harvest for me one time, but that was easy by comparison. I just hope I don't have any more unexpected trips in the near future.

You can try to involve him so he gains knowledge about growing, if you and he are interested.

you could set up a fully automated grow complete with video cameras linked to a website. that way you could be in control of your garden when you're away. more than a few houses are rented soley to establish a "ghost grow" that is remotely monitored. when the police show up to raid the place, nobody is there!

I'd almost say that the issue was your fault. I would never start a non fem seed. I don't gamble with resources. I also dont want to use up one of my 12 plant spots on a possible male. Cut the guy some slack, at lease he tried.

I had that problem once... I went on vacation JUST at the critical moment when some of my plants were showing sex....

ugh, I get a pic from my substitute gardener of a male with pollen sacs up to his eyeballs and my dude is like "uhh i haven't looked at them in 3 days, is this a male???"

FUUUUUUUCK!! YES GET IT OUT GET IT OUT CAREFULLY! lol... live and learn.

Well, these seeds came from the dispensary and were "guaranteed" to be female. Yeah, right.
