Thinking of upgrading my lights...

Not everyone is growing at that large of a scale and judeing by this guy wanting to grow with one 50W LED panel i dont think he is planning on getting 48OZ's in a year. It is benifical for me to use LEDS and CFL lighting and my 250W HPS all together. You dont know that it wont produce more yeild. Honestly you have no idea. Please show me another LED HPS CFL UVB hybrid that failed to produce as much bud as a single HPS light... running the HPS ligght the whole time is stupid.. HPS lights emit mostly yellow and red light.. which is not used heavily during the clone/ veg stage. HPS is only very effective during flowering. That is why MH is around. If i can use LED bulbs that will perform as well as MH bulbs for Veg and cost less then half the price that is a bargen. Useing HPS year round is just stupid. The red spectrum is hardly used untill flowering. Do some homework before you discredit somehting you dont know about. I dont see any Journals going useing the hybrid of lights i have ready to rock and roll. Ill be sure to prove you wrong

The reason I run my HPS all year round (which I said was an example, not even true) is because I have a seperate veg room.

Clearly you didn't read this entire thread as I already stated that LED's work well for Veg. Their higher cost still makes them fairly unworkable for MOST peoples situations, but they do work well.

I veg with my T5's and love it. Won't be changing it until someone can convince me something works better. Since I've never seen any actual grown proof that LED's are better and/or even equivalent (after experiencing setups first hand) I'm going to give the advice that is WELL ACCEPTED by very successful growers and universally considered to be true.

Why let this guy go out and waste his money on a 120W LED that won't help his flowering abilities? He asked if a 120W LED would be an upgrade to his 400w HPS.

I know that you don't think a 120w LED will outgrow a 400w HPS so stop playing "Devils Advocate" or trying to make yourself feel better about using LED's when it's not relevant to the question.

LED's can VEG marijuana plants, yes. They cost more to purchase up front, but can save money over floro and HID for vegging. But flowering they may as well be a flashlight.

In summation a 120w LED is not an UPGRADE from a 400w HPS.

Adding a few LED's to an HPS grow is like throwing sand at the beach and the best upgrade for the buck is going to be a more powerful HPS light.

More light is more light dude.. Especially with this type of plant. The specified RED and BLUE and WHITE specturms which CAN be used by plants with LEDS useing much less heat is the entire idea. You can burn your house down easily with HPS because the bulb gets so FUCKING hot. Im not trying to say LEDS are the replacement for HPS (YET).. I use HPS , LED, AND CFL together becuase i know none of them together are enough, except the HPS , which WILL be helped by the additional lighting GUARANTEED. it dont care what you say one flashlight is better then no flashlights. Dont go out and buy the LED light if you dont have the money sitting around to experiment with HPS... ALSO >> beware.. you talk about upfront price on leds... how about considering all that is needed for HPS.. Additional space, Additional Ventilation, A heat sync... $60.00 Bulbs once a year bla bla bla...

By adding more HPS lighting i mean... Especially if you are confined to a 3'x3' Space like me where adding more then a 400W HPS isnt possible.. the best way to upgrade for me would be to add LED and CFL lighting... Do you not agree? It all depends on the situation and what space is available.

No, I would run a 600w HPS in a 3x3 space without any problems.

It's not a light upgrade to SWITCH from an HPS to an LED. That was the questions. Can he replace an HPS with an LED and it be an upgrade to his lighting. The answer is clearly no. If you wanted to add LED's to your setup because that's what you were able to do with what your growspace allows it's one thing. Considering an LED light an upgrade OVER an HPS is lunacy.
