TDS is just the name of the meter, it stands for Total Dissolved solids, some read in ec others in ppm's, it's your choice, btw nice grow you've got there.
 
not sure why popular terminology had to change from cf then to ec now to ppm , changing fashions i guess
 
So turns out I was giving my plants around 100ppm 0.2 ec :0, the schedule I have with the nutes says to feed 2.1 e.c which is around 1000ppm from what I have red I should half that so that takes it to 500 ppm/ec 1.1, sound about right? Thanks for the help guys!

I noticed a few tip around the plants have brown edges surly that can't b nute burn at 100ppm? Cheers

Pretty much, 500 ppm is 1 ec. 550 ppm is 1.1 ec. As long as you are using a 0.5 conversion pen.
 
It's a ebay jobby so I ain't sure :(, was 7 quid it's a blue squared thing says tds on the wallet it comes in, any one else got one n know if it's 0.5 or 0.7

Surely this was joke, lol. Of course you should read your plants, but not having a meter makes it near impossible to diagnose, or better yet CATCH a problem before it start. If your not monitoring your run-off occasionally a problem can catch you off gaurd. If you have a problem you can't rule out over/underfed, because you have no reference point to begin with.

It doesn't matter what kind of meter you get. You just need something to use as a reference. Doesn't matter if it's .5 or .7 conversion, and no need to convert from ec to ppm. The meter gives the grower a reference, you should still be reading your plants. They are more for detecting changes in the growing medium before they become an issue.

I could grow without one, sure. I just like to catch problems before they start and monitor my growing medium so I avoid problems to begin with.
