Think I have a hermaphrodite...need assurance

hehe, let's see, bigbudballs (appropo name, indeed, for such a post), whether future posters take the kindly subtle hitn that cheetah politely yet in fine spirit tried to make earlier ;-)... perhaps the actual term "pistols" (sic.), the speling most folks who are not botanists or farmers of a sort see written most, though of course, is confusing folks with connotations of the extrmemely phallic sidearm. At any rate, I think it's in order at this juncture to clarify with a brief and more general commentary on the differences that fuct should be looking for, as an uninformed examination might result in premature judgements and rash actions resulting in the unfortunate consequence of, alas, another pulled female, or sometimes just as bad, a lot of pregnant little flowers. The pistils, as bbb pointed out, are a pair of stigma, the characteristic female hairs on the female marijuana plant. these protrude from the calyx (or perhaps a bracht as some would argue)... The male flower has produces stames with anthers which produce pollen, not calyces or stigma, like the females. If a little four-pronged sort of flower shape starts to bloom outward from the bottom of the female calyx with the pistil protruding from it (that is, again, a pair of stigma, or hairs), then it is presenting maleness and you should get it out of your growroom A.S.A.F.P. Good luck and prosperous crops.

Platon, You telling them to get rid of the males ASAFP is the kind of replies that make the new growers freak out and kill the plants before they truely show. They see this ASAFP and then lok at the plant, and anything new with out the hairs showing is a Nut Sack. and they are thinking OH NO>> I MUST KILL IT NOW, NOW, NOW!!!!! These nut sacks have to mature to be able to pollinate. Before they are able to pollinate, you will be able to tell for sure.. It will not be,, "well Hmmm,, what do you think?? Is this Male"... It will be,, Shit,, this plant IS MALE!!!

Yes, SIr Dangly Bits, Your Lordliness,
Witness that fuct mentioned he was originally worried about an hermaphrodite, not simply distinguishing between the sex parts of the cannabis plant, which entailed a bit more exigency, I find. Indeed, please note how most of my reply was urging a knowledgable, rational and careful approach to discerning whether or not he did have an hermie and how to deal with it if he did. At any rate, your point about caution over such a pursuit is well taken and cannot, I concede, be over emphasized...
Fuct--nice job on the castration. Good luck with the rest!

Platon,
I was not trying to bust your chops. I hope I did not sound that way. You post had a lot of good information. Well for the seasoned grower anyway.

Platon, are you related to Don King? LMAO.. Just a joke Bud.

Most newbie growers have no idea what a pistol or a calex is. I ALMOST think it is good for a newbie to see what both a male and a female plant looks like to maturity, and how long the process takes. Then they will relax a some.

No prob, Dangly Bits, I appreciate you bringing me to task in keeping the posts more newbie-oriented. On the other hand, as long as the information is sound and "digestible", and not framed in jargon too terribly convoluted, I see no reason why the newbie, especially the nb venturing to this site actively seeking knowledge, cannot begin to absorb some of the definitions of the more practical particulars? After all, one has to start somewhere...

n00b--I believe you might have been a little confused by the calyx. If your plant was presenting "hairs" (or stigma, one of a pair, called a pistil), the rounded, fuzzy bulbous source of the pistil at the node was most likely a calyx, the female flowers of the cannabis plant. The calyces are often fuzzy and therefore many a nb confuses them at first with a marijuana scrotum of some kind. Just remember to resist the temptation of thinking about male pollen-balls as testicles or it may get confusing =D. As it is, the poor plant's gone now, as you mentioned, so no use lamenting her too much now. Time to start cultivating some new plants!

Btw, Dangly Bits, I like your method of encouraging the nb to see for himself with both genders in maturity. Practice is often admittedly better than theory, especially in the glorious pursuit of cannabis horticulture. Kudos.
