Things to know about FLOWERING!!!

i guess i posted this with the wrong name.

there are a lot of people that are asking how to know if your plant is male or female. well after many plants, and discussing such things this will be a full topic on the flowering of marijuana and finding out whether you have a beautiful girl, or a bothersome boy.

some say that you need to put your plant under 12/12 lighting for it to flower and show their sex. that is one way, but here is another. patience. i have learned some seeing, and doing so myself that plants that are grown for at least a month or two, the plant will show you it's white pistols (pic 1). but this is under a condition that it has some dark time. plants that i have grown under 24/0 did not show their sex. (this is most likely debatable amongst most cultivators, but i myself have not come across a pre-flower that comes out under 24/0. but this does happen under 18/6.

the northern part of southern Ontario begins to flower within the next couple weeks, some and or most have most likely started to show pistols and small irritating balls. (beginning to mid august to october...possibly later)

when placed under stress (aside from Topping (pulling off the top part of a newly forming leaves to allow the branches that grow out of the nodes to grow like a top (pic 2)) and LST (Low stress training - bending or tying down the plant to allow more stalks to grow up, rather than our and up - literally making the plant think the top of it is at the side) and Suppercropping ( bending a stalk over until it cracks, suspending or taping it straight - makes that stalk grow bigger and be stronger - in my accounts that i have crossed)

i have done LST with a couple plants (pic 3, pic 4), it causes a lot more stalks which means if grown properly will allow for much more bud.

obviously if you are growing outside you not need to worry about lights. but indoors, a metal halide or a high pressure sodium light are commonly used (with appropriate devices, and hood. i have used CFLs (condensed flourescent lights) for veg, though they do not yield a good amount of weed unless you have many. standards incandescent bulbs do not produce the appropriate kind of light that plants need for veg or flowering. standard florescent lights are quite good, i have a couple T12s that surprise me when in use. the general rule is point five (one half gram) per one watt of light.

depending on what you are doing with the plants (breeding, cross pollination, or personal yields) you may or may not want to pull out the males as soon as possible. males can ruin entire crops with very few males. but if you do want to cross pollinate then being able to remove the male and keep it alive it a good plan. after it begins releasing it pollen you can literally collect the pollen from one of the sacs and rub it on a specific part of a bud and that area will grow seeds. but cross pollination does not stop there. there is much more to it.

that brings up the question or buying seeds or growing them yourself. unless you experienced and doing cross pollination at a large level, then buying is a better idea. when you buy (from a registered dealer and have the papers to do so) you are able to grow many strains from many parts of the world. so many to choose from, not enough time. take a look at the "seeds" section of this website if you have not.

a note about what i have seen in some males. they tend to be lankier than females when beginning to show sex. (pic 5, pic 6)

please add on any information that any of you see relevant. (things i am wrong about or things i missed...all comment are welcome)

enjoy (pic 7)

Thanks for the info, though i'd like to ask a quick question and see if anyone has a decent answer for me..

I'm on my first grow and like all first growers i've made mistakes, learnt lessons etc.

Started 12/12 about a week ago, i should have mentioned i have only two plants.. First plant suprised me greatly and has turned into a female (after which i did a little dance),
though my second plant is somewhat frustrating me, as it isn't showing signs of sex AT ALL. Though it did have a nice growth spurt after i switched to 2700k CFL lights.

Anyone wanna fill me in? is this normal or what?

One of the first things i said. Patience. I am very impatient. It may take a week or two. God forbid any more

Just keep an eye out for round little nuggets forming at the nodes. You cannot mistake them for anything else. Otherwise, just wait and see.

Yeh i suppose because i haven't seen them first hand yet that i wouldn't know what to look for, but everyone says they form way before pistils so they must be easy to spot.

Good news though, just checked the 2nd plant and i see pistils and no balls, two females :D
