Hey guys,
So I just moved and in the basement the house has a pre built plywood box. Its about 4 feet wide by 3feet deep, 4feet tall. Thing is theres a water pipe running through it at the very top, Its a black PVC water pipe running to the main sewer thing that has the clean out cap on it.(Upper Lateral, I believe its called?). Anyways do guys thing I'd be okay with hanging lights and stuff around it... I mean can it take the elements heat,water,wind etc? I really don't want the pipe to break since its connected to the sewer and all. So i'd figure'd i get some insight from you guys, some must have experience with this kind of thing!

Yeah, just not hang any weight on the pipe itself, and test the box out first and check the heat by touching the pipe with hand before you start a grow. Lucky finding :D

@SenorBrownWater thanks for the advice!

@DC4 Thats my plan I have hooks I'll put on each side of the pipe to hang lights, I'll hang my light and mount a fan leave it on for an hour or so then ill try the hand test thing. I was looking into it & I believe PVC can take up to 200c before it starts to melt so I should be okay.

black abs pipe is strong enough to handle the heat stress of your grow with no problems my concern would be to make sure clean out is tightly closed you dont want sewer water or gases in your grow.

The cap seems to be pretty tight, that was one of the first things I checked for the exact reason you stated make sure no water or gas is going to leak into my grow after my lights and everything are hung.. talk about a buzz kill haha!
So its an ABS pipe thats good to know considering I thought it was PVC the whole time.

Just found this...
ABS is prone to fatigue as a result of direct exposure to sunlight. Some Codes require that all exposed ABS must be painted with latex housepaint for UV protection.

I know it isn't exposed to sunlight, but what about my 200watt(CFL) light .. should that cause any fatigue to the ABS pipe? Or is there not enough UV produced by the light?

just wrap the pipe in some of that shiny bubble wrap type insulation you can get at Lowes,Home Depot,etc. It will reflect the light away from the pipe and keep it a little insulated from heat

I figured I could wrap it in something I just wasn't sure what to use, +I always like the insight from you guys before I go ahead and fuck with things haha ! :bigjoint:

If your grow room gets so hot it disrupts the black abs then the plants are already dead lol. Youll be fine I have 7 yrs of plumbing under my belt. Like stated above just dont hang anything from it. I would suggest going to your local hardware store and getting some insulation for it. They make a reflective insulation for piping or hvac that would help protect it. The only problem I see is if it where the cleanout is and the cant get to a cleanout outside they would come to that cleanout which would mean you have to do some quick moving of the girls etc. happy growing

Thanks that was the most detailed answer yet! As of right now I haven't had a chance to make it to homedepot or anything. I had some tinfoil lying around, so I just wrapped the pipe with foil for now to help reflect light and what not..Im thinkin it should be fine until I get out to get some of that Reflectix bubble insulation or whatever its called.
As far as the clean out goes.. I kinda thought about that and im hoping nothing will go wrong with my sewer until the plants are done or ever lol. If it does I hooope then can find the outside clean out hahah, if not then ill have to move em like a motherfucker:shock:
