teh fatc of teh matetr is a stduy shwos we cna evne READ POSTS jsut lkie thsi one.

Therefore, I highly doubt someone won't understand something if you put "there" instead of "their" will they? Probably not.
I for one, am another person who tends to use more proper spelling & punctuation then others online, but when I just don't give a fuck, I don't expect to be judged.
I could write like some people "wat up wit diz shit, i smoked diz purp shitt n u kno dat b getn u hela hi!" but that... that's stupid.
If it's a minor error like "there" & "their" I think people should be grateful it isn't "wat up wit diz shitt" instead.

Remember, it could be much harder to read posts on here... there & their isn't what we should be complaining/debating about, is it?
I to, stand by the theory, it's the internet, it's a forum, it's not graded, it's not school... so relax.

i assure you i'm plenty relaxed :eyesmoke:. transposing letters and changing words are not the same. the part in bold is what i'm getting at. i can get over careless spelling and grammar but sometimes it's like shorthand, slang, and bad grammar have all joined forces to form some clusterfuck of linguistic diarrhea that is completely indecipherable. the fact that someone claims to be communicating but doesn't seem to care whether anyone can understand them bothers me. /rant actually over

the problem is that people don't care about details. it's not that they are illiterate; they are just plain fucking lazy. what these people need to realize is that for a literate person who reads by glancing and not sounding out each individual word, they have just made it so the reader has to read what they said 4 times. some people actually put MORE effort into writing foolishness than they would to just type normally. i don't mean common misspellings and goofy grammar errors, i mean seriously fucked attempts to communicate a thought.

for all you lazy writers, consider whether the following is appropriate:
if u c4n r34d this u r34lly n33d t0 g37 l41d

i realize that's not exactly the same but it is similar in the respect that most literate people have to read it slowly and more than once because it's NOT FUCKING ENGLISH. it just doesn't read well, just like mangled grammar, and has to be read a couple times. i largely ignore capitalization on the forums but things like punctuation and spelling of certain words DO make a difference. are we or are we not attempting to communicate? paragraphs with 20 lines and not a single punctuation mark simply do not communicate anything at all. to the mad hatter, i was able to understand every thought you communicated. mission accomplished. not everyone's thoughts are so easy to decipher. /rant
I really like this post.
I am one of those unfortunate sods to whom typos and slovenly thumb-typist "English" are like nails on a blackboard. It is not entirely about comprehension; as you say, with enough effort one can *usually* make out what the poster is saying. But there should also be an element of appreciation for the simple beauty of language used well.
Am I one of the grammar nazi's? Emphatically no.
Am I one of the grammar Nazis? Arguably.
Will I post to correct someone's egregious buttrape of language? Oh I hope not.
Will I correct a passage I've quoted? I'm not telling.
