The virus is here folks!

Well, can you disprove that there is an invisible spaghetti monster in the sky. Can you disprove santa claus, or unicorns? Just because you can not disprove something is not a very good reason for believing in it. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and this whole mayan prophecy, 2012 thing has no evidence to back it up whatsoever.

Do I think the mayans had a very advanced lunar calender for their time yes, do I think they are predicting a end to the world? No. In fact to them it's actually just the start of a new life cycle be whatever that was to them. As a heavy astrologically influenced society the event of crossing through the center plane of the galaxy I'am sure held a great importance to them as a major event. I don't think however they thought it would be the end of the world, and I don't think it will be for us either.

As far as pole shifts they have happened in the past we have science has proven that. Will it happen again? Very likely.. when? who knows? How much they will shift? Who knows? If a pole shift does happen will it be the end of the world? I highly doubt it.. it could make our lives difficult at first and maybe claim some lives, as climates will likely drastically change and natural disaster's such as floods, storms, tsunami's etc will likely take place over a period of time as the climate changes and settles into its new cycle. Also the possiblity for changes in our magnetic field could allow strong solar flares to cause disruption possibly shorting out electronics, frying transformers etc.. Nothing that will end the world though all things we could rebound from.

Im a bit of a fan of all theses things, the mayan calander was pretty accurate up till now and 2012 is when they decided to end it. Something is going to happen, will it be the end of the world probaly not, but its fun to speculate about theses things. We will be aligned with the center of the milky way, will earths axis move slightly who knows. another possibilty is our magnetic poles switching, that is where a lot of things may then become strange. These are the things to watched when stoned and people like us are the reason for the history and discovery channels are so popular. Its kinda like urban legends they are all based on some kind of truths.

Thanx for your input SikSol & everyone else. I agree with much of what everyone is saying & in my opinion the human species will eventually be replaced by another species, but the Earth will be fine for quite some time. I'm most interested to see what develops in the next few years regarding the climate...I think things will begin to happen quickly.

what really scares me is a gamma ray pulse from a super nova which can happen pretty much cooks living things unless your deep underground. fortunately there are rare.

look in to what would happen if a super nova collapsed or a white dwarf exploded within 10 or 12 light years from earth it would be very bad the only thing that could be worse would be a very big asteroid. either of these events could end most species.

It's called an immune system. These outbreaks don't scare me because I'm not a germophobe.I get dirty. I don't run out and get every new vaccine they put out there. I don't go to the doctor unless I can't fix the problem on my own.I don't use antibiotics unless they are absolutely needed.People are weakening themselves by not allowing their body to fight invaders on its own.
When you're right, you're right. Absolutely, people abuse antibiotics and doctor's certainly over prescibe over every little sniffle, cough in my opinion.
<<<Passing my immune system around for those in need.

You guys should watch the movie Journey to the edge of the universe. It's documentary that explores the universe and it tells you loads of things. The fun part about it is that a lot of things they tel you is just mans best guesses since we obviously can't reach the end of the universe. That would mean your faster then the big bang! :P

I don't get sick a whole lot because I usually tough it out when I'm sick. The thing is, you could have the worlds best immune system and still get a virus that kills you. Viruses change and mutate very quicky...They were one of my favourite topics in Biology.

viruses are very strange organisms there so simple. i read that they have constructed viruses from scratch in labs using life's basic building blocks.

it's a trip I guess they attatch to us based entirely on chemical attraction.

I think viruses are better explained in chemistry, because of the chemical attraction that allows them to even infect us at all.

i think its called the Abionic Flu, back in the 1980s (i think it was then) they had a huge amount of people that were getting sick and dying. i hear its coming back, my friend whos a pharmasist was telling me about how they were setting up secret spots for giving care to those people.

the simplest viruses are the border between chemistry and life. which side there really on is debated by scientists. i always wonder what the evolutionary purpose is of such things. by looking at simple viruses were looking into the evolution of our past. the cause of mad cow disease is also from my understanding in the grey area there a basic protein called prions if i remember correctly.

"The world's best immune system"......I don't know if you could refer to mine as being the best, but I was recently told that I was a "baby donor." Red Cross NAGS me for blood religiously. It wasn't until the last time I gave blood that they made a big deal about it. When I asked specifically WHY I was a "baby donor"...naturally, the lady taking my blood had no clue.
I'm speculating that it's due to my having an immune system that is overactive--thus balancing out an underactive babies immune system, particularly after surgery???
I don't know...wish I did.
Now I feel guilty....sigh, time to make another appt. to give blood.

an overactive immune system can cause problems of its own there is a balance to be had. everyones immune systems have strengths and weaknesses. what might kill you might not kill me and what would kill me might not kill you all immune sytems have a weak link. there are studies that show attraction to the opposite sex is based to some degree on immune systems. you will normally be attracted to someone who's body has a tolerance to something yours does not and vice versa its very interesting. some % of people can defeat the h.i.v. virus these people carry a gene passed to them from survivors of plagues hundreds of years ago.

Very wild, but makes sense. Now you have me wanting to research and I've already been putting off getting out of here for um.....several hours. There's speculation that my genes from a particular country is possibly a reason for my condition....yet, they only speculate, no "real" evidence.

it would make sense as different genetic populations would have better immunity to some bacteria and viruses or tolerances to specific toxins found in locally eaten foods all because of geographic location and levels of exposure over thousands of years.
