The state bought a new card printer

I haven't seen this posted anywhere even though it is a bit old. The state ordered a new card printer at the beginning of March. Supposedly this new machine can crank out 4,000 cards in a day so hopefully it won't take much longer for them to catch up.

Heres the article

http://www.wlns.com/story/17077131/new-medical-marijuana-cards-on-the-way

The state of Michigan owes thousands of people a medical marijuana card. Officials say a new printer will help solve that problem.

Representatives from the state's Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, who handle all the paperwork and applications when it comes to medical marijuana, say they are one busy office.

When the law originally passed they had 3 employees, but over the last three years they've had to increase their staff to meet the volume. Now they're bringing in some new equipment to stay as efficient as they can.

"When the program was initially started we were led to believe that we would have anywhere from 2,000 to 50,000 patients," said Rae Ramsdell, who works in licensing and regulatory affairs.

But now there are more than 130,000 registered medical marijuana patients.

"It's a very busy office," said Ramsdell.

Ramsdell says the medical marijuana program is so busy they have a back log of about 40,000 people waiting for their medical marijuana cards.

"The printer that we purchased would allow us to print about 800 cards a day…and that wasn't sufficient enough with the number of actual applications we were processing. So we were able to secure a printer that would allow us to print about 4,000 cards a day," said Ramsdell.

On an average day, Ramsdell says they get about 600 pieces of mail and the majority of it is new applications.

"Typically in a regulatory program where you're issuing licenses it slows down. This program has done nothing but increase. We've recently seen a small decrease in the number applications, but we don't know if that's going to continue or not," said Ramsdell.

Only time will tell what's in store for the years to come. In the meantime, those people waiting for their cards have been sent a tamper proof state issued letter.

Ramsdell says the printer will be in sometime this month and she says the cost is completely covered by the fees of those who apply for cards.
And of course, we all love statistics:

More than 131,000 people have been approved for marijuana. Thousands more serve as caregivers, who are allowed to grow marijuana for up to five people.
Ramsdell says the new printer should be ready by mid-March at a cost of "six figures." She says the medical marijuana office started with three employees in 2009 and now has eight full-timers and 15 temps. Ramsdell says the office gets at least 600 pieces of mail a day, including new applications and renewals.

They could have caught up by just not sending me expired cards.... It's the state, they probably need 3-9 months to review the manual and figure out how to plug it in.

They really sent you expired cards?! Thats crazy! Justice would mean a refund of your money! This stuff pisses me off almost as bad as seeing innocent people being raided with assault rifles by men in masks.

From the looks of things, one of my caregiver cards will be expired by the time it gets here.

Why refund it, when it suits the state the law works really well (no answer is aproval paperwork is your card blah blah) when it's up to the law serving me well....that's less important. I did have my copies and and shit but yes I was pretty mad once the initial laughter subsided. what a waste of a hard card that could have had a patients name on it that wasn't up for renewal the minute they got it. should have just skipped me-I forgot about caregiver hard cards anyway so it was a cute surprise. My real card is still WAAAY behind so yeah it was a wasted use of a machine that is obviously driven by chuck norris tears and therefore never runs.

Hopefully the new employees and a bigger machine won't mean more spelling problems on cards. They've fucked up several of mine, all had to be called into the dept and they all blamed each other.....I had to have new cards, and my patients did too. Idiots.

uh....Am I the only one that noticed that 800 cards per day would yield 292,000 cards per year, more than double the amount they claim have been approved in total. Even if they only worked half the days of the year (even a government employee should be able to handle that) they could more than meet the current demand.

Also how does a new printer cost "six figures"? You're telling me the technology to print plastic cards is more than $100,000?

This state is fucking ridiculous on so many levels.

So I haven't received my first patients' card yet, and I sent my paperwork in in late September. Also recieved a tamper-proof approval letter letting me know my patients' paperwork was processed and when the card would expire. EXPIRES MAY 1st! By the time I recieve my first card, it will be expired or at least VERY close to it.

and... how is it possible that i sent in my money order on 10/3/2011

How is it possible that my paperwork was sent out well before yours and you already received a card yet I have not. I guess the bit on the LARA website about them issuing cards to people in order by date application was received is complete bullshit. Hell, my check was cashed on 9/21/2011. My check was cashed before you even had your paperwork sent out.

I better be getting my cards pretty friggin soon here.

WTF! I sent in my renewal application on Feb 4. Any ideas how long renewals are taking?
"Program Status Update (1/31/2012): Staff is processing valid original and renewal applications received in January 2012. If an application is valid then a registry identification card will be issued. Currently there is a backlog on the issuance of registry identification cards.
Registry identification cards are being printed and mailed for original applications received at the end of August.Renewal registry identification cards are being printed and mailed for registrations that expired in October and November."

just got a paper in the mail saying this is my hard card till I get one... LMFAO new printer = fail
When did you send in your paperwork and when did you receive the letter? I'm waiting on 4 letters still darn it!

They do not use it now. Why would they use it if and when they get the new one running? LOL.
