The Quest For The Old Skunky Afghani

Hey there @eastcoastmo , Yes, they will probably be pretty cool. Some plants should be high in CBD like most Hash plants (Lebanese, Moroccan, Himalayan).

The plants have been flowering for 67 days now. Some of them are already "ripe" but I'm going to let them go for a little while longer to make sure the don't throw any nanners (I want nothing be pure females...:weed:).

Some plants started throwing one or two nanners this past week (Right before the finish line.. lol). I culled them immediately. It is to be expected when growing pure landraces indoors.. But fortunately I'll probably be able to find enough pure females at the end of this run.

Some phenos are very interesting.

This one is the fastest-flowering pheno. Ready at day 65. The bud is very dense, not too leafy and the smell is both floral and spicy, very complex smell. I like it.

This one is also ready. It isn't very productive but the bud smells like straight up blueberry. The calyxes are slightly purple also..
View attachment 4286192

I don't know if you guys can see it but I pollinated the lower branches on each plant. Some of the calyxes are swollen. The seeds inside of them are very big. (About twice as big as your average seed.)
View attachment 4286195

And here is the most productive pheno. This one still needs about 2 more weeks but it is massive.

I'm super stoked about the fact that the Afghans have been flowering much faster these past few weeks.

Have a good day/night guys!
Yeah the added cbd would be fantastic!
Are we allowed to know who you got the seeds from or is that a trade secret? Wouldn't mind speaking with them about the area they came from etc. Totally no hassles if you can't :)

@Palmerrdgrower your plants look really bushy. It seem like some of your flowering plants look a little nute burnt, don't they? I like the one in the last pic. It has a great sturdy structure!
There's a few people WORLDWIDE on this project, I come from a state in the untied states that was WORLD renowned for its varietals with similarities to skunk terp profiles. In fact I remember quite clearly the pungency of these cultivars being so over the top that they were put in areas that wouldn't attract up unwanted attention. I do know that these profiles can't be achieved in certain mediums.......I also know that certain cultivars need a strong amount of Ca in the medium to keep them "skunky".Trial and error has seen us getting closer and I enjoy the ride! Idk about guys in Amsterdam understanding what we may mean by RKS because I've never been across the pond but I've squired across the pond goodies in Montreal .........east coast US RKS I beleieve is diff then the European or Dutch version of RKS. I'd like nothing more than to be a part in its coming back and STAYING THE FUK PUT! This cultivar should have never disapeered ..........it's way too ingrained in my positive experiances in the past! Shit even the northern New York Canadian duksfoot they ran many moons ago had a few HEAVY HEAVY skunk phenotypes pop up, not sure on the potency levels mind you but the terpene bouquet was what I remembered it being! If there's anything I can do to help bring it back I'd love to do so!

Hi @eastcoastmo, No of course I don't mind! I just don't know if I'm allowed to mention it on the forum. Am I?
The seeds come from the Small Village of Boria Bal in northern Afghanistan. Although it's further north than the Kush, the plants flower slower because the winter comes later.
So Kush cultivars flower in 8 to 10 weeks whereas northern Afghan heirlooms from the Balkh province need 9 to 12 weeks.

@Covetsculitvars Thank you for sharing that brother! Yes I know that some US breeders like Kevin Jodrey have some old skunks from the late 70's, early 80's and they are currently trying to recreate the old RKS strain.

No doubt, epigenetics also can influence the terp profile! I didn't know that a lot of Ca in particular could make the plants more "Skunky", thanks for the info mate. ;)

Yes I agree, the dutch bred the skunkiness out of the skunk, it's a shame. They favored the sweet phenos over the skunky ones in the 80's and 90's. Maybe because they wanted a stealthier weed?

No I think specific cultivars need Ca abundance in the medium for its full terpene profiles to be seen smelt, idk man I'm learning everyday.

Those plants are absolutely beautiful! I have also heard that many of the longer flowering, narrow-leaf, afghani cultivars were the ones that were the most skunky. I distinctly remember a narrow leaf cultivar that my best friend grew from around 88'-90' with seeds his cousin or uncle brought back from Afghanistan when they were in the military. This plant was so skunky, he would only grow a handful of them at a time to minimize the risk of being ripped. I have also heard sam the skunkman bred out the rk trait for the more fruity one because to many people would get popped because of the rk smell. I also know how you feel about losing beans. I lost a pack of skunk#1 and Nl #1 beans from sensi seed back in 93' when they were still decent. I flew to Amsterdam, paid 200 guilders for the nl#1, and like 35-40 for the sk#1, smuggled them back to the states, and lost them in a move (Im assuming) around 94'.

Hello mister cat!

Thank you very much sir. I wish I would've had fewer herms but still I was able to find some really interesting phenos. Yes you are absolutely right!! I also noticed that the few narrow-leaf Afghani I have are the skunkiest ones. The others are much sweeter/fruitier.

I feel your pain brother. Sensi had an excellent reputation back in the day. These strains were the real deal for sure! Now I keep all my seeds in airtight jars in a dedicated fridge, I don't want to lose any more seeds!

I let all the Afghans I had left ripen for longer than they need as I wanted to make sure they were pure, sexually-stable females.

Here are some pictures taken 73 days after the flip.

The fastest phenos have been ready since day 63. Most plants were ripe around day 71.

These phenos are leafy just like many hash plants.
The smell is sweet and floral but not very unique:
105_1578.JPG
The white spots are simply due to some drops of water that were on the leaves and then evaporated.
105_1565.JPG

This plant is not a big yeilder, however, the buds are slightly purple and smell like 70% blueberry 20% blackberry and 10% floral:

105_1566.JPG

This pheno is the fastest-flowering (Ready at day 63), densest and most pungent of all. :weed:The smell is sweet and spicy with a hint of lime. Very complex. I can't wait to smoke-test it :joint:
If the smoke/taste/effect are good, I will stabilize this pheno and work that line to fix the desirable traits.

Have a great day guys! :bigjoint:

Thank you mister east coast! Yes It would have been great to find some super funky skunky phenos. But that's alright, I'll keep searching ;)

The outcome is pretty good anyway. I'll work the lines further that is for sure. That pungent sweet/spicy/lime pheno would be worth stabilizing, I agree.

Sounds excellent mate! The black lime reserve cultivar going around is an afghani too, you may have hit the jackpot finding another limey type too! If it smokes well and it's other attributes are good, I look forward to seeing it stabilised! I'll be all over that :)

Yes I heard about that black lime from mean gene, apparently it's an amazing smoke. I'm happy that the best-smelling of all the phenos is also one of the fastests to finish.. I hope that I'll be able to lock in that cool trait.

My girlfriend doesn't like that one tho, she says the smell is sickening... but I love it

I'v been drying them slowly to preserve the terps but I should be able to smoke-test it in a couple of days.. Hope it smokes well

Cheers,

Same here man, I'm in Australia so only go by what I hear and have heard it is super dank! Really good news about the early finisher too, always good!

Lol about your mrs, use it anyway, those terps will only carry through to 25% of the offspring. 50% will have a good mix of it!

Looking forward to hearing how she smokes man!! Keep us posted :)

Awsome Journal, indeed the motherland has some excellent cultivars. My buddy was in the Army during the Osama Hunt. His platoon was in charge of eradicating Taliban hash fields. He managed to bring me 13 beans which I managed to grow 8 females from. Seven were identical tight internodes very high calyx to leaf ratio and they smelled like walking through a field of wildflowers. One however was sativa like; very leafy long internodes and loose airy calyxes. I harvested a jar of beans, but FML I forgot the jar outside in 110 degree weather and they all cooked.

@CanadianDank Interesting! Do you put them it paper bags before they are completely dry? My favorite method is to remove all the fan leaves at harvest and dry the plants as slowly as possible preferably at no more than 21 C and then I trim the buds once they are dry. That way I can preserve most of the terpenes. However, in the winter, when the air is too humid, I do a wet trim to prevent the risk of mold.

@eastcoastmo G'day mate! Yes, I'm just like you, I like loud weed. The type of weed that when you open the jar it makes you go: WOW!!! lol ;) Yes, it also depends on which plant has the most dominant genes but it's generally what I've observed too.

@Grow~Master Hello! First of all, my respect to your buddy for risking his life in order to keep all of us safe. Nice! So you've also got a lot of very floral phenos.. Yes, it's a myth that all afghans are short and fast flowering. There are some Sativa-looking plants there too, it's just not what the breeders have selected.
Apparently the Afghans make a special hash with these Sativa/NLD phenos called "Yellow Scorpio" but I've never tried it.
Have you made some seeds with these plants?
Thanks man I appreciate the compliment :bigjoint:

Here is a picture of 2 phenos, the spicy sweet lime (On the left) and the Blueberry one (On the right).

I don't know how the smoke is yet, but I'll let you guys know very soon!!!

Totally agree mate! Looking forward to seeing what you do with them, they sound like really nice plants!
I'd love to find some of the more sativa Afghanis too, I have a few black afghani sativa seeds already and keen to get them popped!

Those buds turned out awesome mate, they look solid!!
