The Must-Have Harvest Toolbox!

Hey RIUers!

If you could go back in time and redo any of the errors you made at your first harvest...let's hear what it would be! With harvest quickly (kinda) approaching what gear are you gathering and what prep are you doing to get ready?

Here is my prep/gear list so far..
  • Quality trimming scissors (what do you reccomend..1 pair or more?!)
  • 32 oz wide mouth mason jars
  • A few small hygrometers for jar monitoring
  • Hanging herb drying bags for buds
  • Line for hanging fresh cuttings
  • Fan
  • Dehumidifier
  • 62% Boveda packs (what percent/brand do you prefer?)
That's my list so far. I think that my plants are gonna stagger in to the finish line, not all at once. I'm not too sure if thats a good or bad thing we'll just have to see.

I'm excited to hear your thoughts.

Best,
BNB

I use half gallon mason jars for curing. The 32 ounce size get annoying having a lot of them. No need for boveda packs 62% unless you plan on storing it for along time, even then you can just keep the jar closed till ur ready to smoke it after it’s cured and should stay fresh as long as you store it properly. I’ve used them a couple times but I don’t use them anymore. You want rubbing alcohol for you scissors while trimming to they get really sticky. Take the good stuff off and smoke that while trimming then clean ur scissors with the alcohol it helps a lot. You also want some kind of trays so you can trim over to, the foil turkey pans from Walmart are cool and get a couple or more they fill up fast and can run out of room.

Fiskar fine point trimming scissors, cheap little pocket knife to scrape the blades with to get the yummy scissor hash.

To wipe the blades I cut a strip of paper towel about 1 x 4" and fold it twice then smear a wee bit of coconut oil inside the fold. Keeps them from gumming up so fast. I also trim fresh off the plants then put the buds in doubled paper bags to slo-dry down in my cool basement for up to 4 weeks. For the first week they need to be dumped out into something to air dry for a half hour or so. Then into smooth sided jars for another few weeks of burping. I use plastic tobacco cans and the mass of buds slides right out to gently break up the clump before re-jarring.

No gloves but work a small amount of the coconut oil into my finger tips on the left hand so the goo doesn't stick. Absorbs really fast so it's not oily. Helps to get some under the nails too for easy cleanup.

No Bovida packs but I've been doing it like that for almost 20 years so have a good feel for it.

Nicely cured buds with no green left and heavenly smells from the jars. Smoke really smooth.

Multiple scissors and a lil mason jar of iso. When a pair gets gummed up you just switch out for a clean pair. Drop the sticky pair in the iso cup, you can just keep switching like that, never have to use sticky scissors. You can also store the iso jar in your fridge and keep adding anything you clean up with iso. Evap it off when you're ready for a nice puddle, I usually use it for edibles.

I strictly use hydrofarm scissors, or knockoffs of the exact design. I've tried around 20 styles and that's the only kind that I'll use. I dont go in for much else, but I do like to rock around 4x pair of scissors and just set aside the dirty pair and keep going. I use a lighter to heat the blade and a napkin to easily wipe off the warm residue. A jar of iso to keep them in works well but I've knocked that over a few times and that blows if it gets on your pile of trimmed bud.

I dry trim and cure in turkey bags. The largest single bag/jar gives the best result imo, or multiple large bags if your ballin out.

I gave up on the springed trimming scissors when I started growing gorilla glue. Ended up with these. I wished they were curved sometimes but they go alot longer before needing to be scraped for hash balls. I use my old fiskars to clean them.

And I always trim over a big old Costco sized piece of parchment paper, not dropping what Amazon Canada is asking for meshed trim trays.

get the fluorine coated chikamasa scissors they're resin resistant just don't scrape them with a razor I did my whole harvest with a set of these and it was amazing!

I second the trim bin being worth the 80$, You will harvest tons of keif from it and not drop any nugs on the floor

I like to take OTC allergy medication 30 minutes before I start, music, beer, tissues for blowing nose when medicine fails, change of clothes for when I leave the room so my wife doesn't kill me for tracking leaf all over the house and everything mentioned above. I really like who said multiply scissors, I have 4 of the same ones.

Multiple trim scissors, alcohol to keep sticky scissors blades in (I prefer somthing I can sip later....burbon, rum...) brown paper bags one cut down for "trim bin" I dont like gloves and get the hash latter off of my fingers. I actually break down a lot with just my fingers.....it goes supper fast and I don't cramp up from scissors. Oh and olive oil I put a few drops on a paper towel and wipe the scissor blades and pivot if they have one after I take them out of the alcohol.....keeps them working smooth.
