Heya Klx,

An update for you , and a further question!

Latest batch of clones put in the aqua cloner (which were put in late on the 17th) are now just starting to show root nubs on the two fastest to root strains after 4 1/2 days. And the system is still looking spotless. So it seems that problem has been over come at last thankfully.

Key factors for me seem to have been cleaning system properly and then setting up with clean water with 4-5ppm ( according to test strips) of chlorine/bleach. (still haven't got my hands on the Hydrogen peroxide).Water has been maintaned at 28degC, but was not PHed, nor any clone start type products added.

Failure on previous runs and the clone wilting continually experienced when pump was cycled off appears to be due to the slime that developed on the ends of the stems that I experienced when using non chlorinated water. I have since read elsewhere that this slime actually prevents the clones taking up water ( florists apparently also experience this with cut flowers). It seems that as long as the system is set up clean and kept clean, the clones do not end up with this problem. Where as if the system is not clean/sterile the slime very quickly appears and once its in its all down hill from there regardless of trying to add in any chorine etc after the slime appears.

It has also been interesting to monitor and view the clones cut ends under both scenarios with low power microscope - without bleach the slime was very quickly visible and you could not really see the vascular structure of the cut ends. Whereas with the chlorine the ends have stayed spotless and you can clearly see the structure.

Now the question, did you cut your own foam inserts for your net pots? Mine turned up yesterday and while the pots are exactly the same as yours, the foam inserts are not. The inserts that came with it are just cheap open cell foam which I can imagine causing problems - particularly at the cloning stage as the will be prone to becoming water logged. So I'm thinking to cut my own out of some neoprene.

But being lazy where ever possible *grin* I'd though i'd ask just in case you had manged to source some!

Yes mate, its all about keeping the pathogens out exactly right. Whether it's bleach, or calcium hypochlorite, or H2O2 all seems to work.

Yes, the foam inserts that come with the cheap china pots are useless. I cut my own out of foam flooring that they sell lots of places here, people use it for kids play areas and stuff. I have heard people also using pool noodles or you can buy some inserts that they use in the commercial clone machines. But much cheaper to make your own if you have some the right size hole saw. Let me find a link of what I use....

Awesome! Thanks mate, I'm pretty sure they stock those here also!

How did you mange to cut them out with a hole saw? All of mine have a central drill bit that i think would result in too large a hole in the foam puck.

I just took it off. You will probably ruin a few but then get the hang of it. Reverse works good

Screw all of that. I built this about 2weeks ago and holy shit its been so wonderful and you NEVER have to clean collars again!
Just make sure your holes the right size to where the 1/2" PVC slides in snug snug and holds nicely with just a friction fit. The 2 piece step bit set from Harbor Freight has a size that does it perfectly. You might notice on the pics there's 2 pieces that while getting the hole size just right, I made a bit too big and had to wrap a few layers of Teflon tape around to make up the difference. But all the others are fine. Each piece of PVC is the same length, about 3.5"long. I just staggered their heights in an effort to keep them from touching as much as possible.
You just slide your clones in and the natural branching at the top holds them up just fine. Twist your roots together when you pull them out, or if you have to, pull them free through the bottom instead.
Already have roots.

Yup ding ding ding! You got it. dollar tree cake holder. Haha. As far as what's under the bucket?it's just a small pump with a 3 sprayerhead manifold.super simple

Hey @klx glad I seen this thread I’m really considering switching to flood and drain lately and all the clay balls was really what was putting me off.

this looks perfect.

how often do you have to flood and how deep is your water for this?

No disrespect intended and nothing wrong with your cloner. but if you had bothered to read the thread through you would have seen that what is being discussed is more a method from cloning to finishing, not just cloning itself. And that the cloning method being discussed is integral to that. Whereas yours is not.

The info you have requested has already been covered in the thread. It is highly informative and Klx has been fricken awesome in being helpful and patiently answering questions. ( lots from me) But I think its always respectful and sensible to read a thread thru before asking questions that may have already been covered. Besides that, there is so much helpful and good information in this one it would benefit to read it thru!

And that the cloning method being discussed is integral to that. Whereas yours is not.
This is the exact same thing as an Aero cloner, just without the collars. I think it's worth mentioning so if they get sick of cleaning collars, they have somewhere to turn.

There are a lot of pages I am working through them but it does take some time to get through many pages :)

cheers mate I won’t be using a riser. I will be running it like a Iws system with a tall water tank away from the grow and not under the flood tray.

I guess my question would be relevant for any type of flood and drain. As I’ve never done flood and drain Im trying to figure out how deep I should make my flood tray and how deep it needs to be flooded to accommodate enough space for 4 sog plants per sqft worth of roots. I have height limits so the shorter I can get away with the better

I’ve got 100sqm of fibreglass resin/matting/topcoat to line my flood trays my and grow room floor with once I get this detailed out

You only need to flood an inch or so once you get roots all the way down through your medium. Until then you may need to top water for a few days it wont take long, but once roots are established you dont need to flood very high at all. But deeper trays will mean less floods if you are anything like me :/

What if I’m not using a medium like you are in your original post. There will be no wicking action.

I’m thinking 5 or 6 inch deep tray? Flood to 3-4 inch?

Same applies really. All you need to do is make sure the roots do not dry out so leave them in your cloner a bit longer before moving them to the flood tray and make sure a good spray of roots are present, then just set your flood level to that. Less roots, you will need to flood higher, more roots, flood lower.

Edit> Clay balls for example, hardly wick at all either so you are always flooding to the root level if you use them anyway

Ah right ok. So your leaving the top layer of roots dry all the time then?

If you flood much more than 1/3 the height of the clay pebbles, you're just gonna have a tray of floating clay balls and plants with roots floating in it. You literally HAVE to flood shallow with Hydroton.
