The Hempy Air Pot!

Now I know it is considered blasphemy to modify the hempy bucket in any way to some people, but I like to tinker. I randomly thought this design up and feel it could work. I hope to try it very soon.

I remember back in high school these pictures of what is known as natures "water level". Basically in nature the earth is layered with different layers doing different things and providing different elements. Let's take a look at how it looks.

What is happening is as you go further down the earth it becomes more and more porous which gets more and more saturated with water. This is cool because in nature, the plants that reach the water table often have very specialized roots, that preform different duties based on the level of ground they are in. meaning some roots will be specialized to uptakes nutes while others the ones that reach the rez will mainly uptake water.

The roots reaching the water table do not have a lot of nutes to eat, because there is less microbes and the water they are feeding on has a very low ppm, because the COCO filters the nutes and actually absorbs them and releases them as the plants need it.

So what I propose is to mimic this in a hempy bucket, yet with one modification to give an even more rigorous growth of roots.

Let's take a look at the Hempy Air Pot:

- Cut a 5 gallon round bucket to 2 inches tall.
- Place it snugly in the bottom of a 5 gal smart pot.
- Inside the 2 inch bucket add 100% chunky perlite - I like to add crushed egg shells to mimic natures calcium rich water level.
- Next layer is 25% perlite / 75% coco.
- Then 50% perlite / 50% coco.
- Finally the top layer of 25% perlite / 75% coco.

I feel this would act in the same way as the hempy bucket with the added benefit of smart pots and its air pruning capabilities. The water would sit in the bottom reservoir and any excess will pour out all sides of the fiberious material of the smart pots.

I have yet to try this, but plan on doing so after I take some cuttings in a few weeks. If anyone has the materials on hand and are willing to give it a shot please let us know your results!

The only issue I see with this is that in my experience when I mix coco coir and perlite, the coco coir tends to move to the bottom over time after watering the plant, while perlite tends to rise to the top. I've had plants where the bottom half was 100% perlite and the top half was 100% coco coir mix, but over time the top was completely covered in perlite, and the coco coir kept working more towards the bottom. I wonder if this idea would work if you used hydroton rocks (the balls for hydroponics) at the bottom since they're much heavier than perlite.

I have thought of a similar Idea to this because this could be one of the best pots ever. I have been searching for this and I am so glad that I found your thread.

Please do a side by side experiment of regular Hempy and the Air Hempy and let us all know how it works out. I do agree with Growweedtoday, that it might work better to put something larger in the bottom. Hydroton or Lava rock in the bottom 2" seems like a good idea to keep the coco out of the rez. I like the idea you have of having more perlite in the lower level and more coco in the top. Good luck!
