The Getting Back/In Shape Thread

At first I thought this would be better suited for a journal type thing, but I figured there are probably more people in the same shoes as me who'd like to get back in shape too. I think it would be a cool idea to keep each other motivated and comment on each other's progress. I'll probably be updating it similar to this post a few times a week, I find the more you keep track of your statistics the easier it is to keep consistent.

Anyway, I have a really useful app on my phone I use when I run, it keeps track of distance, speed, calories burned, all kinds of useful shit! It might be free, but I think I paid $.99 for it, it's called MapMyRUN

Pictures are always a plus to help see the progress. I'm chubby right now but fuck it, I won't be by July, so I'll get some pics of my fat ass self up here as the thread progresses.

Share helpful tips on healthy foods too, maybe something you came across that gives you a lot of energy, a good recipe for some healthy chicken dinner, whatever.

My pro tips for becoming healthy are as follows, this is stuff I've personally observed to work well;

1. Water! Drink NOTHING but water.

2. Chicken and fish are the best sources of protein with the least amount of fat, great pre-workout foods

3. Always eat breakfast

4. Don't excessively snack throughout the day

5. Leafy greens are excellent for your body, the darker the better

6. Fresh > Frozen > Canned

7. KEEP CONSISTENT, if you have a regular workout schedule and you miss ONE day, you're statistically 75% more likely to skip the next one!

8. Don't exercise everyday, give your body time to recover

9. Don't feel guilty for indulging in something every once in a while, like a piece of cake for someones birthday

10. Wear sunblock! One bad sunburn increases your risk of getting skin cancer by 50%

11. Change up your workouts to keep yourself interested, one day jog a couple miles, the next day go cycle, swim, etc.

12. MUSIC is a huge motivator, get an MP3 player and listen to it while you workout!

So for me, today is day one. I just got back from a really short, moderately intense (because of the fat) workout, here are the results of that and my current status;

Day 1 - May 17, 2012

Distance: 1.56 miles
Duration: 24:52
Calories burned: 98
Average speed: 3 mi/h
Pace: 15:44 min/mile
Current weight: *190lbs (6'2")
*estimate

--------------------------------------------------
Day 2 - May 18, 2012

Distance: 3.95 miles
Duration: 101:44
Calories burned: 260
Average speed: 3 mi/h
Pace: 15:34 min/mile

After today I feel sore as hell!

--------------------------------------------------

The distance helps out a LOT. The beginning is always the toughest part, but I know once the current distance reaches somewhere around 15-20 miles, my body will have much more stamina, it's kind of like a snowball effect. The more you do it, the more you can do.

So hopefully more people join in on this, perfect time to get your summer beach body and get rid of those love handles!
:-P

Nice man, getting back into shape was my news years resolution. I use an app called 'All Sport GPS' that basically does the same thing. I've been cycling and running for the past 5 months and I feel fucking great. I only went from 185 to 175 (6' 1") in those 5 months but my endurance has drastically increased. I actually just got back from a ride. Here's my stats

Distance: 20.83 miles
Duration: 1:01:33
Calories burned: 820

Tomorrow I go for a 5 mile jog and since the weather is improving i'll probably swim some laps too :-o

Yeah dude, I never really realized what an extra 30lbs will do to you! Last August I was actually bordering on the underweight limit around 165lbs, trim as fuck though, with the v-lines below the abs the ladies love and everything! I'd like to get down to 175lbs, that's just about perfect for my frame.

Can you jog 5 miles nonstop or do you still need to take a couple breaks in between?

The recovery time when you're on your level is like super human! I remember running last summer at top shape and I could run for a good mile and a half, two miles before I had to walk and slow my breathing, then it only took 30 seconds max before I was ready to go again! After the first day back, I ran for maybe 3 blocks before I was DEAD TIRED! Took like 3-4 more minutes before I was ready to run again...

190 for 6 2 isn't bad man u probably just need toning. Try doing some pushups and pullups, I got a 6 pack and never ran or did a sit up ever. I'm also 6 2 but i probably weigh less I was crash dieting but it worked. I wear a 34 slacks with room in the waist (I need a belt). I think I need to put more weight on.

I think if anybody wants to lose weight, they should go buy a skateboard with badass trucks and wheels. It's just so fun and you work on balance and cardio while you're gliding through the streets.

IMO I don't like when people aren't having fun when they workout.. it's just so sad :(.

Same thing I did, went for a small jog over to this 100 staircase my town has and back, was gassed as fuck. Just stay consistent and keep posting in the thread your results. I'm going to get some pics up soon, that'll probably make it more interesting to see the progress.

Yeah but omg when was the last time you ate it on a skateboard?! lol shit HURTS man!! As a kid I was like "fuck it, pain heals" as an adult I'm like "shit I don't have medical insurance..."

lol pad.. I'm young so I'm still like fuck it. It's pretty f-ing fun even when you have to bail on grass going top speeds down fat hills. My ankle does pop in places where it didn't before I tore my ligament. I guess if you don't/can't skateboard, biking is just as fun.

Great job Padawan!! You're probably going to be really sore, especially on day 3, but work it out by running more and, if you have really sore spots, get some arnica gel; it's amazing!

I cracked my knee SKATEBOARDING, but doctor said that was last straw that it was probably all the rugby i was playing. had to get a fake knee in so now i just swim since it hurts often because screwed my tendons there. when i was active i was 200 am 5'10" and 21. I was built nicely (mostly legs) now i am 226 was 250, 3 months ago. I do swimming about 4-5 times a week and do push ups and those kind of workout but none that involve my knees, my goal is to get down to 190 ish since i have lost muscle mass in my legs

it's been a while.. been busy as hell with all sorts of stuff going on.

anyways if your trying to grow muscle, then you do isolation type excersises and alternate them by day. for example, arms/chest one day, shoulders/back the next... i don't like those types of workouts with machines and isolating every last muscle...

push ups, sit ups and dips work just fine... i used to do pull ups not any more, now I compensate with some back work with these used kettle bells i bought..... not the same though....if you want a six pack get ready to do a lot of ab work... when i used to be more pretentious i'd do 300-500 (alternating between situps, crunches, leg raises, and side to side with 15-20lb weights)PER DAY, had a nice lil athelitc build... the good ol days..

now i feel like a grandpa, riding a bike... hardly ever doing pushups... beer belly... :)

remember always stretch before and lightly after every workout...

I'm more motivated than ever, especially with the weather being so damn great. Sunshine for a good 14 hours. I hate running in the winter, shit's too cold, I just end up hibernating and not staying active.

I damn near had a sixpac last summer man, that's one of the goals this year, that is a good indicator of low body fat %. What I noticed most was really clear definition on my arms and chest, all my pants were loose, I could barely eat a full sized meal but I always had a ton of energy.
