The fishing thread ( not about fish fertilizer)

Car accident 3 weeks ago. Got hit from behind at a red light. Moving still hurts. Been a minute since I can reach for my phone tbh.
Damn that sucks man.
Me and some buddies were coming back from partying and fishing the Berkeley pier and had just dropped down into Tracy on the 205 and traffic was backed up, shitty spot not sure if they’ve finally widened that stretch yet. I had to have been at a stop for a good 30 seconds when I seen a mother fucker in a Dodge truck coming full speed right at me. I had no where to go good thing I always leave a good distance between me and the car in front of me. Dipshit slammed on his brakes just seconds before rear ending me.
fucking destroyed the bed on my truck. I’ve had whiplash before. But never that bad. None of us went away in an ambulance but probably should have.
at the chiropractor I started going to because of that accident, my scheduled appointments were at the very same time as the NFL white cap judge Pete Morelli. Cool guy.

Looks like Nimbus Dam, Sac. It’s a spectator sport, at least five fights a day. It’s pretty hilarious.
Up here at the outlet on the feather has some good combat fishing too. I’ve been known to dabble at both spots.

If you want combat fishing go to grizzly Island pier. It's a 12 foot pier and we many times will have over 20 lines in the water at once.
Yeah remember, I used to fish there too back in the day. Kinda sucks landing a sturgeon there.

dude there made some rod balancer contraptions that clamped onto the railing snatched one off him. Most of the heads there liked using sturgeon crack in netting but I always killed it with grass shrimp. I always did pretty good out there fishing only big incoming tides

The sturgeon yes in coming tide. Striper outgoing up here.

King salmon eggs is the bait of choice yep.

For the most part everyone is respectful and works together. If a big fish is hooked all lines come out of the water while trying to land it. Bring it in. Walk it around the pier to the bank and one of the other guys will grab it.

Good group of guys up there.

It’s a trip how some spots do better on different tidal movement. The higher you get on the Sac, still influenced by tides, the outgo always seemed to work better for me. Same with Cache slough. But i’d say isleton down i’m all about the incoming. The super deep holes by pge power plants I’ve had luck on both if you can stay on pick over the hole.

but yeah, back when you could still use 2 barbed hook rigs i was always about grass shrimp. 5 on each hook :-) Did better than most(when bankin it) who were using roe or other shit.1st choice was from dockside in Pittsburg. Second was from Bobs in isleton i had oneof my boats in a slip at Vierras. And third was from Gotcha. The absolute worst was from Haps in Rio Vista. They didn’t keep there shrimp healthy. Gotta be healthy grass shrimp.

Yea. No barbed hooks for surgeon. I use a 2 barb rig for stripers.

People do use grass shrimp but get upset when a striper takes it. So they try to stick with roe or eel so the stripers won't touch it as much.

I hear ya but it’s like clockwork, when the sturgeon bite is on the striper dinks get lost. That’s if you’re actually over a hole or up to the edge of a shoal, etc

Collinsville used to be a hotspot for sturgeon. Hooked up almost everytime I fished there but landing it was almost impossible. The hot baits we used were mud shrimp, ghost shrimp, and good ole grass shrimp. I caught my biggest sturgeon underneath the Benicia Bridge (off the bank) on the smallest grass shrimp I’ve ever seen; could barely string them on the hook. I fished the Grizzly Island bridge way before they built that little pier and before the Gov. put up No Trespassing songs throughout the whole Delta. That pretty much ended my Delta fishing. All our “spots” are posted No Trespassing now- thanks CA.

That 1st bridge are is great for baitfish now. Pikeminnows, split tails, mudsuckers and some catfish.

Keep driving all the way past the second bridge until you see the water on your left and that is where we catch the sturgeon.

We used to drive all the way to the end of the road by the eucalyptus trees for sturgeon. Straight across the water from Antioch. For grass shrimp and bait fish we would go to Joice Island using a simple minnow trap with scraps of anchovy, old salmon eggs, and even cat food. Fuckin bait was expensive. We used to buy monster blood and pile worms, nowadays they’re tiny. Times change lol.

My most productive hole around there in a boat was in broad slough. My PB there was 13 all slot size in that killer peak high tide window. One day the whole armada was out near chain island. One of those fuckers cruised by me seen what was up. Posted it on the fish sniffer and fucked my hole up for quite a while.
That spot would get so hot I sware you could drop down popsicle anchovie and they’d suck em up. Miss that spot. I think they would come out of sherman lake and feed at the shoal. That’s my theory anyways lol.

Are people still using Mudsuckers and Bullheads for the big strippers?

I would imagine so. Down there i always used bullheads if using live bait because it’s more brackish water. Up higher mudsuckers. To be honest though, i was always usually too busy chasing down the sturgeon bite to go after striper. But once they brought back the 2nd rod stamp i’d often throw out one for striper.

$20 bills work best for them.
Lol. Shit. You damn near need 20 dollar bills to catch them striper drifting jumbo minnows up around colusa too. Things are fuckin bank! But worth it. Dudes catch the 30-50 even 60 lb’ers! Casting swimbaits in the spring but that hurts my back casting like that nowadays standing in a boat. My style is drifting minnows. Can still hook them big mommas. Hella fun. Hopefully I finally have time this spring to get back on them but with my mid May deadline to finish the house i dunno.

i’ve had a few old timers ask me how i did out there when back to the dock and i’d tel them i filled the box with the perfect sized ones on minnows. And they’d say oh, you’re one of those rich fisherman! lol.
