God damn man.
I got a good buddy who knows most the heads that fish there. It’s about time i give that spot a try.
Leave the trout rod at home and bring the salmon setup because them bows(i think they’re steelhead genetics) are fuckin huge.the feather river hatchery releases shitloads of yearling steelhead into the afterbay. I’m sure they’ve released them up above a few times. Either way, i want some of that fish on.
Steelhead and rainbow trout are the same fish. There's no difference. Steelhead go into big water and come back. That's all.

Oh I know. Genetically speaking lol.
Around here though, any rainbow trout in waterways unobstructed from the ocean are considered steelhead. Up higher on say the Sac though they aren’t though. Kinda confusing regulation wise but anyways.
That spot where that monster was caught has zero access to the ocean. I’m willing to bet it came from the hatchery steelhead stock though.

No but with my daughter up in GV now i’ll prob be hitting up all those new to me bodies of water.
*Edit
i just googled where little grass valley res is. Not near grass valley lol.
Not near anywhere really, La Porte is the town. I don't think they even have a store anymore. We camped up there, beautiful lake. They have to close campgrounds for Eagle nesting every year.

Speaking of “eagle”
There are a few different strains of rainbow trout here in this state. When you see the young steelheads before they release they are very hardy bows. Way better looking than the same size stocker rainbow for release. They remind me of the eagle lake bows.
Kinda where I was going with me
thinkin the bows in the diversion pools are probably from the steelhead stock.

Because the whities could be close by ?

Nothing but enjoyment having a 2ft rod bent at 270 degrees .

Raised my girls ice fishing , turned one into a lover while I keep motivating the other.
Ice fishing Simcoe Lakers is diff than trolling for Lakers or jigging the bar. Might as well toss a wet towel on the end of the line and reel it up. Plus they shit all over the boat. Nasty greasers! Booooring
I'll take the kings and bows you can have all the Lakers

Lake Simcoe is heaven.

Mind you can get a bit bitter out there and over the years the parking has been getting worse .

But having a snowmobile helps.
I go early ice before the snow easy walk. Then it's perch town
Parkings a joke, either locals complaining about your car, new no parking signs everywhere, no free parking, enforced 20-30 dollar lots or taking a ticket is your only option now. Parked Infront of this bitter guys house and he must have called parking enforcement multiple times. When I got off the ice there was a flatbed pulling up ready to haul away my truck. I laughed and got in my truck and locked the doors. Told the guy sorry not this time pal. Sad part is the sign said parking. What it didn't say is that it's only 3 hr parking. So somehow you're just supposed to know that. Just a big cash grab from the municipality. We bring them so much business yet they complain about us and treat us like trash. FN bullshit if you ask me. I'd much rather go fish Erie hardwater but those days are few and far between

I watch my tipup from my living room window ;) but my favourite winter fish is pike just before sunset and you’ve got 2-3 hitting the suckers at once :o!

It’s been years getting on a part of erie, like out of leamington say .
Once so far and it was 3 weeks in a row before it was not the safest again.
Other than say LPB but the ice fishing now is nothing like it was 30 years ago we’re you pull your rod to take a break .

The last white fish I saw come out of this lake was 30 years ago. They just died out ‍♂, never did find out why? The only good fishing now is Lakers and they stock 15-35,000 a year. Bass is tough and pike are going fast.

There's parts that freeze every year but can be dicey at best. Best is getting out from point ab. Into like 75-80fow. Run 3 hooks on a dropshot and pull up 3 Jumbo's lol
