This is the story of Jack the Ripper and it is a fine example of what can happen along the way during a breeding project. I have always wanted to have Jacks Cleaner in seed form. I have been prompted to Self her using STS but I don’t believe in that type of breeding I feel a male plays a vital role in breeding projects. About 6 years ago I used a Blueberry to outcross the Jacks Cleaner to. Bushy Old Grower used some of these seeds to create the famous lifesaver. Two years ago I used the Jacks Cleaner x Blueberry to back cross the Jacks Cleaner to and created Jacks Cleaner back cross. Lost yet? I’ll try and untangle this mess as we continue on this journey.
Even though the JC bx kicks ass, has won awards and is used in breeding projects it was not what I was looking for. Also about that time I ran Vic’s Space Queen and found it to be some of the best weed I ever smoked. We also found an amazing Space Queen male that Jill used to create Jillybean and we used to create Spacejill. It was not an easy decision but we decided after working with Space Dude he was a much better choice for a parent to outcross Jacks Cleaner to and re started completely over passing on the Jacks Cleaner back cross and Jacks Cleaner Blueberry to other members of TGA.

We used our standard breeding methods and completed the project on schedule and promptly started a test run of these new seeds. One weird trait of this new hybrid is twin seedlings. Many growers have reported duel sprouts form one seed but it’s normal for one not to survive when this occurs. All the seeds were started using rapid rooters with no pre soaking. I like to be as rough as possible and I never pamper test runs, once seedlings came up and developed nice roots I transplanted them into 1 gallon containers and placed under a 400 watt Metal halide light. Once the plants matured the males were taken to a separate area and the best possible females were tagged and the rest tossed. We ended up with 3 females we felt met or selection criteria. The plants were topped and trained and vegged for about 45 days and reached a size of 24” with multiple growing heads.
Once in bud the plants quickly started swelling with buds and by day 25 copious amounts of resin had become visible. Once in bud things got interesting when we had visible resin at just 2 weeks of budding and by week 3 we had a nice build up of trichomes and the first hints of the Lemon smell I was looking for.

One of the female plants stretched so much I had to bend her severely to keep her close to equal to the rest of the crop. Even the lower buds drip with resin and I am happy to report the mango lemon smell I was looking for I nailed it dead center. Normally I top all plants in our garden but with test plants it takes up less room if I leave them un topped and as I usually am moving them about a lot taking pictures and such it just makes them more manageable.

You can see in the picture the plants developed nicely grown in only my own super soil and in a 5 gallon pot fed only water the entire run to test her natural ability to produce without being pushed you can see the results speak for themselves.

Maturing much faster than JC was another hopeful goal and at 50 days I’d say we nailed that trait as well. All three females are alike with the exception of the height of the one female. To avoid numerical confusion we gave each female a name. Lemango became the tall one that looked more Space Queen dominant. Soylent Green was apparently the largest of the three as far as cola size and the plant most resembling Jacks Cleaner with her predictable resin leaf curl was given the name Pink lemonade. This is the plant that became the star during multiple sessions in front of my lens.

The trichome production is off the chart and she has the classic raised head on a tall stalk that’s so classic of JC. I feel this represents the total sum of what I’ve learned and collected doing this my entire adult life. To be able to pass on traits I have seen attributed to the mother plant and then to actually create a Phenotype with the same qualities and maybe even some improvements is truly humbling. The plant has Pink resin ok? I mean would you be happy or what? Now I have a gene pool to work with and continue the Cubing of the original Jacks Cleaner f1 to produce a more stable line but variety is the spice of life among tokers and each of the females we found is a legendary keeper in itself. I enjoy each plants smoke equally but there are subtle differences that make it nice to choose from according to my needs.

We will be entering this strain in the 2006 Cannabis Cup and if it’s a fair event I have no doubt this girl will place very high on the score cards.

I think the best news about this strain is there available now. We have a lot of cool things from tasty to pretty to sativas to crazy combos of berry and lemon but I’m taking this to the pot snobs party. Lets have a look at the end results, Lemango was more Space Queen dominant and has a nice citrus and Fruit taste as her name implies. Soylent Green did indeed yield the most coming in at just over 2 ounces of cured dried bud. She has a nice Lemon Berry taste that is my favorite in a joint having a much smoother draw than the parent JC. Finally Pink Lemonade is the most potent and most like JC. Incredible expansion as all the resin melts away on the bud and your lungs simply explode and your head follows shortly after, it only takes 3 bong hits to make me smile like a Cheshire cat.

JTR has been in my stable for a long time now. I got me a heavy lemon drop candy pheno that brings an awesome euphoria to the table. I have found very few strains that I'm cautious with because of their pure strength and JTR will place you firmly on your butt if you ingest it like your usual bud. Pure lemon love rollercoaster that JTR is!
I've crossed it with a few things to see if the power or lemon flavor can transfer to another strain. I got lemon from everything this baby pollenated and the THC factor was lifted in everything as well. Damn fine strain JackTheRipper. Nice job Subcool.

I started growing cannabis some 30 years ago outdoors in the US down south where the laws and the cops are no joke when it comes to cannabis. I had many run ins with the law and have traveled across the world seeking more knowledge and running from courts and stupid laws. I have lived both in the UK and Amsterdam and Canada and have tried to gain as much knowledge as possible while traveling in order to become better at my craft. While living in Amsterdam I worked for Gypsy Nirvana and saw the breeding game unveiled and decided I could do it better, more honestly if I ever had the opportunity. I now live on the west coast and am a legal medical grower along with the love of my life MzJill. We provide premium quality cannabis (know in the US as dank or kind bud) to a few registered patients. I have spent the last decade collecting unique clone only strains in order to collect the proper effect for certain ailments. I have developed a love for photography and combining my love for both, created a Huge data base on cannabis genetics complete with in depth grow guides posted online on many internet sites. We have start to finish tutorials on over 40 strains and the list keeps growing every time we start more seeds. Jill and I now have several published articles and also are part of TGA ( Team Green Avenger) a group of breeders working with clone only strains to produce new hybrids with devastating potency and unique sweet taste.
Working with TGA we have helped create some 25 new hybrids and have changed the way the business is done my offering live support and instant feedback using our large data base of medical/professional growers that work with our strains. When a new strain is created it is grown out online for the world to see the results along side of test grows run by happy volunteers that receive free seeds. We have been invited to the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam and plan to enter our 8 week Haze Hybrid Jack the Ripper

One of the strains we ran across that has almost urban legend status is DAB now there is a short story behind the name and I will disclose it here for the first time. The plant was created using a Herm fem that was labeled D and the Clone mom was B it only took on the silly iconic name when people started growing it out and mistakenly added the A.

This strain has huge following in the underground I have been wanting to run it for many years. About 9 years ago I actually had a cut of DAB( Dank ass Bitch) but a trip by the cops assured I had to wait a few years to give her a go again. These genetics were collected by the great A/B Hybrid. This is a famous under ground grower that helped pioneer “Selfing” a technique used on females to create all female seeds. He also was famous for his Purple Sativa and his Emerald Triangle Funk. He used these two very different strains to create his own Sativa/Indica hybrid. There used to be vast amounts of information on these two strains but with the fall of Overgrow/Cannabis world this information was lost. I feel very lucky an old friend was nice enough to share his small stash of seeds with me. One of the main attractions to this hybrid was the seeds are almost 15 years old! A few breeders warned me about herm traits, as the rumor is this hybrid was created using male flowers from a female plant. This would be passed on to future generations if I used this in breeding projects.

This is always a danger with working with unknown crosses but the only way to eliminate this is to grow out the strain and cull these problem plants from the gene pool. Nebu probably is the best authority on these genetics. Nebu is well known in the US for his work with purple cannabis mainly Mendencino Purps and is a leading authority on the original cut, he actually had the DAB clone from what I understand. This is what he had to say” The AB Hybrid is a jewel of an example of this level, purpling very dramatically in the leaves with splashes amongst the calyxes. We’re on to some serious bag appeal now! The AB Hybrid is a hermaphroditic cross between Emerald Triangle Funk and an old Oregon Purple indica/sativa hybrid. The taste is just dank and funky (inherited from the ET Funk). In fact, the particular AB Hybrid phenotype pictured has been appropriately dubbed “DAB,” an acronym for dank-ass bitch. However, this hybrid also possesses some very sweet, exotic perfume notes, and is so distinctive that it is quite difficult to put into words. “Smells like hippies,” some have said. Perhaps this is because of the combination of dank and incense. It definitely fills the room with its aroma, which lingers for hours.”

One trick we use to force out these unwanted plants is, once a plant is budding we subject it to irregular light cycles. Interrupting the dark period and extending the light cycle any plants that have herm tendencies will show us quick. Unfortunately using this technique we eliminated the best looking phenotype based on early observations. Z was a bushy girl with nice short spacing but at day 21 she showed male flowers and was killed. I was looking for a new short purple Indica what I found inside this pack of 14-year-old seeds was kind of unexpected. This phenotype labeled #6 grew fast and tall so she was placed in the back of the grow room in the corner and her buds were bent over into the light. I cringe as I think about how many times I almost dragged her tall ass out and tossed her. She took up the space of 2-normal sized plants. I am so glad I am stubborn and waited to see the final outcome. There are also 2 plants that are very similar in looks and smell but there very small and will not make it on a second trip through the bud room.
This all got started when an old friend contacted me and asked if I was interested in growing out some A/B. I cracked 10 and selected the best 7 to transplant. You can see how nice and deep green with purple stems the seedlings were. As they grew up I cloned each one and then transplanted each and placed into 12/12 to bud each plant out. I kept watch mainly on the short plants with widest leaves, as these are DAB like qualities.
The 3 more Sativa like plants didn’t get a lot of attention but somehow I was out of 5 gallon pots when I transplanted Phenotype 6 and she was placed in one of my full size containers holding 7 full gallons of soil. I placed her in the back as I mentioned and she has been ignored for the most part. Out of the 7 seedlings all were female, which lends credibility to the warnings I received and the assertion A/B was created using a stress herm female plant to create Female seeds. I have only located the one herm at this stage. Phenotype 1 and 4 are a wash as they are both to small to consider running a second time between the two I don’t see even on ounce of meds and no matter how good they may turn out there are minimum standards. Phenotype #2 has the same incredible smell but her yield and finished product will have to be compared to #6 but based on 40 day results #6 is superior mainly based on size alone, however the smaller dread like buds on #2 intrigue me so she has been left to finish even though I have no room and have to manually move her into dark each day and then back into the vegetive room where the light timers are set for 18/6 but the only location that we have any room.

You can see phenotype #2 is also beautiful it’s one draw back as I mentioned is the cola size which amount to monkey paw sized buds and were need Gorilla arms if it’s going to outshine phenotype #6. We will keep an eye on the rest inspecting every 2 days for male flowers it’s obvious now warnings were correct and Nebu’s information is also confirmed now we have to just wait and see if any more show herm traits.
Day 45
Sadly I found more herm flowers on Phenotype #3 so the shortest thickest one is now culled from the heard. I took shots of Phenotype #6 today 2/20 and she is even more spectacular than before. I hope it’s extremely good because with 2 herm plants in my main bud room I am bound to have seeds which will all have to be tossed in the trash due to there origins. That now has us down to 2 out of 7 females and based on size #6 has the lead and there is a good chance she will not run again so we have now have 1 female to watch and she has been searched from head to toe and she is free of any male flowers at this point. I don’t think I have ever seen a cooler looking plant. The buds almost have a Jade like appearance and the contrasting maroon/burgundy just heightens this effect.
It reeks at this point and entering the grow room is a blast of Funk and candy from all the other TGA gear.

Well the results are now in. The one phenotype that did not herm is one hell of a plant. The bud has a very thick oily smell that reminds me of Garlic and skunk. It seems the leaf itself has a very strong odor. We turned the plants that exhibited herm traits into Bubble hash and it’s truly spectacular. I don’t feel I would add this strain to my stash as it takes over 60 days to finish and simply reeks like no plant I have ever grown before. The bubble is without the musty taste and melts like caramel in the bowl. While it is not a keeper strain I am very happy I ran her and will enjoy every speck of hash I make from her. I am not disappointed with the results, as a grower you never stop seeking knowledge and the only way I know to find out if a strain is any good is to grow her out. After drying the buds were also a bit fluffy but the patient we gave the buds to was extremely impressed with both taste and high. I hope you enjoyed this documentation of this legendary strain.

Garden Management

Now that we have some of the basics covered, it’s time to look at some advanced methods.

I manage three part rooms to maximize yields. As a 100% medical garden, we have a lot of low yielding phenotypes, so instead of worrying about a plant like Tiny Bomb giving me 40 grams of finished medicine, I just make sure I am turning her around every 50 days. This method is not for the lazy grower and requires a good deal of manual labor.

I accomplish this 50 day turnaround through lots of labor and a working knowledge of my strains. I know that Tiny Bomb and SpaceJill will be done in about 50 days and I can harvest them and make some room for others to spread out. Jillybean comes down a few days later and then soon to follow is Apollo-13. That leaves JackTheRipper and Jack’sCleaner to finish and I usually completely swap all the plants at this time. Once my veg room plants are the right height to be flowered, I flip the timer and start budding them early. Males and any plants that have lagged behind are left under the 400 MH to mature a bit longer.

You can see the plants in veg have already started stretching a bit.[pic]
Once the main harvest is completed and I have removed all the plants from the main 1000 watt room, I reaffix the floor tarp with staples and sweep up well. I replace the pest strips and vacuum out the A/C filter. If they need it, I remove hood lenses and clean away bugs and clean with Windex. Dirty glass can really kill your lumens. I then vacuum the floor to remove all those pesky dead yellow leaves (damn soil growers) and the rooms are ready to load. I like to place tall plants like JC in the rear and then the A-13s. The rear lamp is a 1000 watt HPS Sunmaster Deluxe. I position each plant so that every growing head fits into the slot provided by the other.

In about seven days, I will go in and tie all the stretching plants down. By employing this method and the tree areas, I can pull down six or even seven crops per year. If they’re a bit smaller, the extra two crops make up for it.

Say a small crop is 40 ounces. Even if you can squeeze in one of these via hard word and that’s a lot of butter and Bubble hash. When you are a caregiver, extra medicine just means better butter.

I am glad the law in my state recognizes that people have real needs and the limits here are manageable. You will have to learn your local laws and apply them to these methods.

We took cuts last week from these very same plants the day they went 12/12. We have two cuttings of each and our cloning temps are constant. We rarely lose any cuts and we’re definitely not going to lose both. Many growers are shocked when I mention this method, but we have back-up cuts in the refrigerator and with other cardholders.

This will not work for someone who is not hands on. This won’t work if you’re lazy. You have to be on top of this during the transition and make sure the budding plants don’t get light pollution. It’s also hard to stay on a watering schedule so again, you must know your gear.

I have been fine tuning this three room system for almost seven years straight with one change, and that’s the addition of the 400 watt for males instead of just some flourescents.

Clones and seedlings grow under an 18/6 light cycle until I can see roots in the lower drain holes. They then get transplanted into large seven gallon lowboy pots, using my Super Soil in the bottom 2/3 of the pot and straight premium potting soil in the top 1/3. They are then placed back in 18/6 under the same 1000 watt MH. Once the plants have been in veg for nearly 60 days, almost everything is finishing up in the bud room and harvest is approaching.

When everything is trimmed up, the old pots moved out, and the soil recycled, it’s time to clean everything well, washing the floor and tarps with bleach and making sure everything is mold free. At this time, I clean off the glass in the vented hoods with glass cleaner. A clean room is the sign of a good grower! The plants are now placed in the main bud room that measures 10’x5’ with two 1000 watt HPS Hortilux bulbs. This is the time when we clean up our plants, removing any smaller shoots that are shaded still so that this energy that would have gone to produce fluff and added time to trimming can instead go to the upper buds that are actually in the light. This also allows more air to circulate under the canopy so that O2 doesn’t stratify. This in itself will increase the yields and make your trimming a bit easier. I am not sure everyone will get this analogy, but the plant looking up should kind of look like broccoli with everything up top.

Night temps run around 72 degrees Fahrenheit and the A/C is set just to dehumidify mainly. Do not let humidity rise above 50% for long. In cooler climates, this can invite mildew and mold. I remove and wash inside my window unit well with disinfectant and anti microbal wash to prevent mold slime. A grow room A/C gets way funky.

It may take some time before you perfect this method and you will make mistakes but each time you do you will learn from it!

Day 45 is here and as the bud room swells to completion in the next 15 days, it’s time to take clones from the plants that are still vegging. The plants in veg have been under 18/6 since this same task was done on the last crop, basically for the entire 45 days.

If you follow my three area setup, you know that with some manual labor and lots of close attention, I am able to load a crop every 50 days. It is going to be really hard this time since I have some monster plants that finish late and are not going to fit into the shorter veg room so I will have to work it out. The bud room is completely packed with wall to wall towering colas in the rear and shorter, sticky bushes in the front.

Time to take clones! Even though I don’t keep mother plants, I make sure we take clones while plants are super healthy and in full vegetative state. This is very important. If you take a cutting from a sick or unhealthy plant, it can be damaged and never grow like the original plant. This is also the time to clean up the canopy and perform your bondage. Trim off sucker shoots and make sure everything is right for entering the flowering phase.

To recap: On Day 45, the veg room is healthy and the plants are 24-30” tall with numerous growing shoots. It is time for your tallest varieties to be budded, this is done by carrying the plants into a dark area when 12 hours of light has passed. The shorter finishing varieties are given at least another week of 18/6, and some varieties like Purple Urkle can be left in 18/6 for three to four months before they are large enough to place into flower and get decent yields.

I will start harvesting Saturday, taking Tiny Bomb first. Just a bit longer and on Day 56 I’ll chop Space Queen. This will allow me to spread out the monsters you see in the back to finish and have less shading and crowding. [pic]

What’s cool is this is when some varieties really pack on the weight and hopefully so will the other late finishing varieties in your garden. This extra week can mean a huge difference in many plants.

Quality is what counts to me. In 35 years of growing, I have used ebb and flow, NFT, DWC, aero misters and many other contraptions. My organic soil produces the best buds I have ever smoked! If your plants bud for 10-14 days before even entering the bud room, then they’re ready to finish two weeks faster, too! I am just a workaholic and this works for me. If I didn't have my garden I'd lose my mind.
