If you're really serious about it, I recommend selfing any and all plants and figuring out what they bring to the table before making decisions.
If you S1 a plant and 50% of the plants are similar vs a plant where 5% are similar... the 50% plant is better for breeding due to heterosis. You will get more vigor and it will be easier to stablize if you cross with another plant similar in nature. The more true breeding the more heterosis you will see, and heterosis is almost always a good thing.
Hybrid vigor and all that. You probably know as much if you've been reading, but it will cut your breeding time in half if you do the S1's to determine how homo or hetero your plants are
