The Army...

You get paid when you sign right?

And when you make it through basic?

And...?

What are the incentives?
I want to travel...I want to meet people...I could do that in the army WHILE getting paid...
I gotta go to Mexico and smoke for a couple years, and trip my nuts off first.

But getting paid to travel and meet people, under my own complete legal protection(with a big gun, and after I've done a couple years of personal travel), seems like a good/fun idea.

Does anyone have any information?

From what I hear go with the navy. Less danger, more career opportunities when you get out. My cousin-in-law is a sonar specialist on a nuclear sub. Is stationed in Hawaii, recently did a 3 month tour that stopped in Panama and when he gets out he can do anything from ultrasounds to doppler radar.

I want to be in the desert though.
Or at least somewhere on land, so I can talk to locals :D

I'm in the process of goin now, you wont be paid untill you finish basic training but it will be atleast 4thou. Depending on your score on the asvab test you can get paid more or less, this test also will be a big part in telling the army what jobs you can apply/qualify for.
I'm also gonna let you know now if you wanna know some real specific questions call a recruiter. all the stuff online is bullshit....

I just got out the Marine Corps 6 months ago. Basiclly the army has sign up bonuses and shit. U dont get them till u complete ur school after bootcamp. U dont get any pay right away. U get paid in bootcamp but u dont really get to use it obviously. Army has a pretty long training schedual to. Super gay the way they do it with levels and shit. Anyways... War aint all its cracked up to b trust me, i went to iraq n 09. All my buddys went to afghan last year and i lost one buddy. There all pretty messed up to. U have no idea how much stress u take especially for an army 12-b14 month deployment. U do 6 montbs, 2 weeks home and back to the shit hole for 6 months. I was deployed 8 months and i still have eatting problems, anxiety problems, panic attacks and PTSD on top of my spin being compressed over an inch from wear my flak and kevlar and gear all the damn time. I also have shoulder problems from my job. I was an armorer so i had to list some pretty heavy weapons off racks and trucks that way over head. But with all that being n the military is pretty badass. U learn lots of cool shit and do alot more cool shit. Ull have the absolute best times of ur life and ull have as equally bad times. U will know ppl that r killed and hurt. U will deploy for a fact if u join and u will definitly ask ur self what the fuck u were thinking when u signed that paper and took off from MEPS hahahahahaha.

Why would you sign up to participate in the country's biggest organised crime ring 'because it's legal if it's war'? I understand every territory has the right to defend itself but everyone seems to want an excuse to shoot the shit out of eachother a d it's okay because they are in uniform.

I think they will sweet talk you too, I'm fed up with recruiters turning up at school trying to get people to sign their life away with the promise of cash and glory. The army fucked up my grandfather who joined after dropping out of school at 14, in turn fucking up his marriage and my mother. People are not meant to cannon fodder. Even if you take up one of the many army jobs not involving combat, why would you want to support the institution?

Sorry, I know I have nothing to do with the US army but I'm particularly incensed with rage lately after remembering Bloody Sunday (google it) I have a problem with EVERYBODY's military. If no one had one, no one else would need one. Yes the soldiers help out in times of a natural disaster etc but it's just because they have no be to kill at the time and it makes them look like heroes, to be worshipped until they turn the gun on You.

I never liked it either.

But it would be paid travel, with almost guaranteed survival :D
And definitely more protection than civilian travel :D

I feel too strongly to support them for the sake of money. If I got kicked out of T-Bird's house right now and told it's the Army or fend for myself, I am going with my compass, backpack and 2 man tent, Bear Grylls-style and selling bushcraft before tarnishing myself on the inside.

You have the luxury of not knowing what i know and thank The Lord you haven't seen what I have seen

Sorry you feel that way. I served my Marine Corps for 8 years fought in Wars as an infantry man and value my freedom because having done all that I know how fragile it really is.

We use words like Honor Loyalty, dedication to duty
we use these words in a lifetime of defending a nation

I have neither the time or inclination to explain myself - to a man who sleep under the very Blanket of freedom of which we provide
and then questions the manner in which we provide it.
I would rather you just said thank you and went on your way.

My how quickly some Americans forget Pearl Harbor and 9/11 I don't. I hope you don't

Finshaggy if that is how you feel don't sign up you will just be dead weight and get someone Killed.

If your not going for love of country don't waste your time.
Lol

Because the 15-25% of the military made up of other Texans, who go there (I have talked to tons of them) for money, or to shoot guns, are wasting their time...Right?

I'm not American. I am a teenage girl. I have not forgotten. I apologised because I know I sound young and full of assumption. I have nothing against you personally, and your service is commendable, I just have a problem with the institution. And regularly, the army has turned on the people it is meant to protect under the guise of being under orders.

I don't want to fight with you. As aforementioned I know the army has been indespensible in time of national crisis and when security is in doubt.

But if no one had an army, no one invaded and no one fought a war, there would no reason to fear for security. I know that is not a realistic world view right now, but if (IF) everyone dropped their guns and got off their high horses, we could all get on with our lives and stop pouring money into researching how best to blow someone else's shit up.

Once more, your service is a commendable personal achievement at the very least. I am sorry you have seen and felt the terrible things you have and agree Fin could well put someone's life in danger by 'tagging along for the ride'. I have no quarrell with you personally. I have a problem with everybody's quarrells that lead to needless bloodshed and nonsensical politics.

I will leave it there. I'm not qualified nor impassioned to speak further.
