THC % Does Not Measure The High

Hello All ,

New user here . Not so new grower . No old timer either .

I recently have taken to testing my strains for THC % with a local lab . I am noticing the grows that get great user reviews do not necessarily have the highest THC % . In fact , the local favorite is coming in at 9% , which is half of my other strains !

I do not think the lab is at fault . I think there is a lot more to the quality of the high than THC % . In addition , I am starting to question the reasoning behind the commonly held notion that Sativas are always energetic and Indicas are sleepers .

There is a BBC documentary that really seems to confirm this . See YouTube
.

Does anybody have similar observations ?

I am trying to understand why some strains make people giggle and chat and others make people sleep . THC % is not the deciding factor . CBD ? CBN ? Other Magic Stuff ?

Thank You ,
Matt Thematic
It is all in the Terpenes because it damn sure isn't in the Trichomes. I shake my entire grow with dry ice for the Kief. Removed from the plant material the Trichomes all smell exactly the same and the stone is exactly the same. Years ago I kept it all separated but I soon realized it wasn't making a lick of difference. All the Jars of Kief smell and smoke exactly the same be it Indica, Sativa or Hybrid.

I make the vast majority of it into edible oil Capsules and again they are all identical in effects regardless of the base strain. Once the Delta-9-THC is converted by your body into the far stronger and longer lasting 11-Hydroxy-THC it outstrips the rest of the cannabinoids and pushes you into Psychedelic territory.

???

Terpenes are produced in trichomes... and trichomes contain terpenes.

maybe you are growing genetically very similar hybrids regardless of the name of the strain and what the breeder says...

I had a strain the other day called Ape Shit. It was about 15% and it got me higher than I have been in a looooong time.

This may be old news to most here, dunno, but this guy had an eye opener the other day.
Took two different strains and mixed them thinking I could get the best of both together.
Turned out to pretty much remove the effects of the stronger strain and totally change the buzz.
In my mind it seems like either the change in the terp combination and/or the amounts in the combination caused this somehow.
Fyi it was lemon og haze and lilac diesel. There was at least one terp listed that the other didn't have.
The stronger strain lemon og haze (22%) was much more racy / heady, and that pretty much went away .
Find that totally interesting.
Makes me think about these terp profiles and how it's very possible that amazing strains could be lurking in lots of "culls", being passed over where one more cross or harvest timing could change everything.

Great post, Matt! Yes, IF "the" secret ingredient in the marijuana high is THC, then I must have been smoking something else back in the 70's....because I ALWAYS got high and I know the weed was likely not very high in THC at all!
I do, however, remember getting many batches of weed that had obviously been grown terribly and tasted like hay and ammonia...But on other occasions, when the plants were harvested at a different time of year, we got the skunk or the blueberry. Again, most all of it was grown without a lot of knowledge of growing at that time. It was haphazard and hit/miss. We didn't know that the leaves and stems wouldn't get you high, so it ALL got baled up, regardless. Ditchweed was ditchweed then, as it is now. But the primo stuff, back then was shamefully more potent in terms of the entire picture of what getting high means. You had to have been there to argue the point. Many of us are still around! :)

high thc just makes my eyes not want any light. it should also mean the terp ratio is lower. if the plant is focused on thc, it may not make as many terps to temper it.

GreenHouseSeeds has said their Great White Shark is one of their strains with the lowest THC levels, however it is a world known strain and it is used in dispensaries all over the world.. I remember reading there is OVER 60 DIFFERENT cannabanoids and we currently can only measure two, CBD and CBN... There is obviously other factors that contribute to the all around buzz achieved from each different strain that we have yet to be able to measure and properly see which strain gives off which buzz simply by looking at its test results.

I think the great white shark is 12% if i remember right, but it was said the combination of the other cannabaniods allow it to be a much more desirable buzz then many strains with higher measurable test results.....
Oh please! Greenhouse is known for polluting every grow they ever come in contact with. Reprehensible to the MAX. I would not believe Arjan with a reefer in his hand telling me it is even marijuana.

As I have said before, after almost 90 years of lying about it the govt. and science are a long ways behind. This for a substance known, grown, and used for what 20,000 years? That just so happens to have traits that make it so compatible with our bodies that it could not have been engineered better. We don't actually know and understand why we get high. We don't know how it works in our endocrine or nervous system. We don't actually KNOW what is making us high. Or how.

Labels such as THC content are idiots using reference to alcohol proof as measures to use in cannabis. It is apples and oranges people.

In this regard, the pollen chuckers aren't doing you any favors. "Let's mix this with that" 90% of the time ends up as shit. You would have to actually know what you started with and that is something most don't. Unless you see the seeds being harvested from a plant you have no idea of where or what that is. And even then, what was that plant?

In some strains I have to go by what I was told. I am lucky enough to have seeds from a strain that the breeder took the pains to grow 14 times to understand what he was dealing with. And even then I found 'new' information about the strain that no one else has found.

It is all a discovery process. But the facts remain, we have no idea.

You may like to check out Royal Queen Seeds. You can click on more info (or something like that) and all the strains have all the critical info listed below them side by side.

This shows exactly what you are saying. I just went thru their list of autos and was simply delighted by the descriptions. Some of the lower THC ones show to be the most enjoyable.

In their list of about 50 or so strains THERE WAS ONLY ONE that they said caused laughing, that was ROYAL CRITICAL AUTO.
