Temp and humidity controllers - school me

I have started batting around the idea of a temp/humidity controller. I have a few questions.

1. I will not be running an AC. Is it a waste to run a controller just with fans and dehumidifier?

2. Do you have to run "smart" devices for the controllers to work?

3. My dehumidifier does not have an analog switch, but digital buttons. Is there a way that a controller could turn that on and off?

4. I currently run a vivosun 6" fan and filter. It runs on low 24/7 because I need to maintain negative pressure for smell purposes. Do the controllers work in a manner that I turn it oh high and then the controller controls the voltage to the fan to change the speed?

5. When I say that I have started looking at controllers, I am talking about the budget controllers. Ac infinity 67 and 69 etc...

I realize I may be pipe dreaming that there us an inexpensive way to help control this stuff, but figured I would ask so I can plan for the future.

1) not at all. People use controllers to kick on exhausts once they get too hot or humid…those infinity controllers can ramp up it gets out of its tolerance zone. I have a exhaust fan on a controller that is only there as a fail safe if my AC fails. It’ll kick on once temps hit 88F

2) depends on the controller. I don’t know much about those ac infinity devices. I know one controller works only with ACI devices. There is another one that will work with anything that has a Plug.

3) so a controller will either turn a device on or off. A way to test your Dehum if it can be compatible is to set your Dehum to its desired place. Pull the cord out of the wall. Plug the cord back into the socket. Did it keep the settings the same or did it revert back to a factory setting?

my AC is on a analog controller. My ac remembers my previous settings in case of a blackout and once power is restored (by the analog controller kicking it on) it goes back to its previous setting.

why does the Dehum need a seperste controller? Can the factory controls not be dialed in?

4)I believe you would need a ACI fan with their controller to have a controller adjusts the fan speed automatically. I would contact ACI directly.

5) inkbird makes cheap reliable controllers too.

Lets see.

I have a unit that comes on when it hits the temp.
One that shuts things off when it hits temp
One that delays the start/restart of things 15 minutes incase of brown outs. No need to gamble with surges and stuff.
The CO2 controller runs the burner.

Any of them cheap? Not on your life. This is Grow stuff LOL. We all have sucker written on our foreheads if you ask me.

1 you can look at your exhaust as Min and max . Min could be x amount of fresh air for plants and also to ensure the space is maintaining a negative pressure. if its a non passive system and you are introducing air into the space via another fan. Then again you would want the incoming cfm to be less then out going fan, wich gives you a negative pressure for smell reasons primarily. If we wanted the cleanest enviroment we would create a slight postive pressure like clean rooms Operating rooms and such.
Max is typically meant to handle your cooling loads . So if can handle the cooling loads via free cooling its definitely cheaper. If you are pulling the air from a conditioned space you have already paid to condition it.


If Commercial and legal, i would assume a slight positive is hands down the way to go.
But for most the simplicity of passive is solid way to go.

2 Do you have to run "smart" devices for the controllers to work? If you are talking full blown tridium, JCI , Honeywell or other system they are very expensive with licensing fees but.... all the trick stuff you can do . remote monitoring with graphics email / phone notifications for alarming trending and sooo much more.
if you are referring to the smart Ac infinity controller I think its very hard to beat for the money. Setpoints RH and Temp with proportionate speed control
Now where i think they should go with this is separate temperature inputs and link it to the different control loops. So i wouldn't be surprised if we see some changes from them or competition in the future. But for the cost this would be my choice. Also if you decide to go that route with your fan make sure it is compatible.
3 Yes a programmable controller with digital and analog inputs and outputs, again for residential starts getting pricey . Commercially programmable controllers would be the good way to go.
If you conditioned the makeup air (or zone it is pulling from then all your controller will need to do is increase the amount of CFM it exhausts pulling in conditioned drier air in the process. The AC infinity controller will do this for you. Very simple as the Dehumidifier has its own setpoint setting.
You want more DH in space increase exhaust.
4 If you are getting a proportional controller for the fan , that it can either work as a reostat= (adjust voltage least turn down ratio) or VFD that reduces voltage and hz. More expensive, better turn down ratio. Not sure what the AC infinity but has respectable turn down .
5. I was in same boat for a small setup residential if you can find a dual channel controller that does RH and temp with a variable output for close to that cost i will be interested as well .
6. Check out all the controllers for sure

Ac infinity gear isn’t stupid price imo and they’ve just came out with the uis system that can control different brands of lighting aswell as multiple sockets so you can integrate your current non ac infinity gear

Different controllers work differently.

For instance, I use a couple Inkbirds. One for my dehumidifier, one for my in-tent heater. Both have the ability to run two devices (aka a humidifier/dehumidifier on the one for humidity and the one for temp has plugs for AC/Heater). I only use one plug for each as I don't run AC and my dehumidifiers are outside my tent.

I also use an AC Infinity controller for my ventilation fans (Intake & exhaust). this controller works slightly differently as you can pick temp high/low and humidity high/low set points and it will ramp the fans up or down according to how much or little you want air to move through the tent/room, and you can tell it the increments you want the ramp-up or down. It also allows for timed/scheduled on-off as well as sub-programs for lights-on vs. lights-out periods. Their newest controller also allows for control of circulation fans in the same way and can act as a light controller as well.

So basically with what I have it's:
-Inkbird controller for humidifier
-Inkbird controller for heat
-AC Infinity Controller for in/out fans set with triggers.

My circulation fans are on smart plugs but soon will also be AC Infinity controlled.

I've been surprised that all the controllers have been sub-100$. Seems pretty good. I have a pre-order for the 96 that should come with some adapters for the old molex connectors, as well as one of the new circulation fans. I bought some of the UIS extensions too because I'm not sure how long the cables that come with any of that stuff will be.

Aw you’ll love the ac infinity interface mate, the iPhone app is first class

I have a 67 currently and have the previous iteration as well. I like that they've added some features along the way, but the big drawback was that it was BT only, and that meant I have to run a separate wifi unit to track humidity and temps when I'm not at home. It also is a bummer that the 67 doesn't allow for independent fan control though it can control 2 fans.
 
What i would like to see and would be more than happy to part with a device put or 2 would be to replace them with inputs either analog inputs or digital for interlocks.
Looks like they are off to a solid start

If you're into it you can build your own "smart" grow room. Using "dimmable" exhaust fans and wifi switches you can turn on/off appliances once temps/hum get out of desired ranges.

The system to use here would be home assistent which runs on a Raspberry pi (or a pc but thats not ideal because of power draw). Costs you about 100 to set up, then sensors (zigbee capable ones are nice) another maybe 40 and then whatever you need to control. But it needs some work to configure.
