Teen who killed over video game gets 23 years
Obsessed with 'Halo 3,' he shot his mother when she tried to take it away

Daniel Petric, 17, who could have gotten life without parole, shook his head slightly, sniffled and held back tears but sat down without saying a word when given the chance by Judge James Burge.

Petric's eyes were red from crying when his father, Mark Petric, asked the judge to be lenient and said his son regrets killing his mother and reminds his father often that he is glad his father survived.

"He's told me that many times," said Mark Petric. As for his mother, Daniel Petric's frequent comment is "Dad, I miss mom. I miss mom," the father said.

"He still does not understand why he did something so terrible," Mark Petric told the judge.

The prosecution disputed the contention that Petric had shown remorse for the crimes and asked for the maximum sentence.

Besides his father, Petric's sister, grandfather and other family members attended the hearing. Some wiped away tears.

Petric was convicted of shooting his parents in October 2007 after they took the game "Halo 3" away from him. The judge had said the teen was so obsessed over a video game that he may have believed that, like the characters in the game, death wasn't real.

The defense claimed his age and addiction to the game made him less responsible.

In the video game "Halo 3," players shoot alien monsters that have taken over the Earth.

fool needs life in prison w/out any chance of parole or getting out....if someone kills there own mother over something so ridiculous as a video game, then he doesn't need to ever be part of society again. I dont even have a word for this kid...

No seriously that's fucked up.

I wonder what his Gamertag was?

Of course his dad will blame video games, and still visit his son all the time. This is what is so fucked up in our society.
Nooo dont blame the kids or parents, Blame TV and video games.

If his parents disciplined him like real parents maybe this wouldnt have happened.

But their again who knows what was disturbing this young lad.
Maybe he was possesed, yeah thats it.

i think its great this fucking savage monster is behind bars.
Cause I tell you what, it would only be a matter of time before they found a basement full of mutilated women and this fucking ass bag wearing human skin playing Halo
and screaming in his head set " Tea bag me and I'll have sex with your moms and sisters ribcage"

Damn man I love the violent games, an man I love some Halo. But If dinners ready or my girl wants some steak:roll:
Fuck halo I'm out.

Currently video game addiction isn't recognized by psychiatrists as a real addiction.
It's not currently listed as such in the books.
I have seen this addiction and it kills in many ways though. It's just as deadly as any other addiction.
Odds are those that suffer it have extremely addictive personalities to begin with though, and if it wasn't the game it would be something else that made them think and act irrationally.
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it was one of his gaming buddies that said something like "if my parents did that I kill them on the spot"
That might have even brought this on.
Was he fully aware of what he was doing at the time?
That's certainly open for debate.
The real issue here is that people want to blame the video game too.
The video game is not at fault, millions of people play them daily and these cases are far to rare to blame the game.
It's tragic , I hope the kid gets some help while he's in prison, because he obviously has some short circuits in his brain.
That is assuming he doesn't try to off himself, the weight of what he did is probably still only just starting to weigh down on him.

he knew what he was doing, he has no one to blame but himself, he crossed the ultimate line when he couldnt control his anger, and he killed, and not only did he murder someone, it was his own mother, and he tried to kill his father too! wtf...he didnt think death wasnt real, he didnt think he was playing halo when he shot them, he had a real gun, not a fuckin plasma blaster.

...I blame the parents for letting his addiction get to that point in the first place. And that's bullshit, about believing death wasn't real... he was making excuses. As a lifelong gamer, stuff like this offends me. People who have trouble bridging the gap between fantasy and reality shouldn't be allowed to pick up a controller. Should be some kind of test or something. Fuckers...

The version I read today in the paper was this kid tried to make it look like a murder suicide. Does that not sound like a plotting mind? This kid knew exactly what he did. And tried to get away with it

Now don't think I won't shoot you cuz I'm popular/got a p90 that'll pop at ya/my clip loaded wit 16 shots for ya/catch ya slippin moms ima give ya way I got for ya/you never had a hot gun ya waste and blood on got shoe cuz your moms said the wrong shit to you/ u not like me and I'm not like u. I'm like a animal when I spit and moms tried to play me/got semi autos and hollow points for others tryin to play me/ u need more than an Uzi to move me I'm gangsta to the core you can't move me/ I Neva herd of ya I'll murda ya- 50 cent
Anyway ya video games are bad for young kids with no self control, if his parents were smart they would cut the Internet off and lie and say we don't have enough money to pay for it so we had to cut it. I bet the kid would start working. I'd never hurt my mom, peace.

kid probably had some sort of psychological problems anyway, the gaming being coincidentally the thing that pushed him over the line. or maybe his parents were always taking shit away from him and he got sick of it. and whose gun was it? why'd he have access to it? tragic though, and he definitely needs to be locked up in prison or an asylum.

GrowTech

stays relevant.
Sometimes people do/say really dumb things when they are upset... Sometimes people don't grasp the reality of what they are doing until its too late... Parents should have had this kid in therapy, or something.

I'm sure this kid looks back at what he does and cries for the loss of his mother, not the loss of his rights... but It's too late now because this 17 year old kid is going to spend the best years of his life behind bars.

Either way, think before you speak, and shoot.... I guess ;)
