How much did Mitt Romney pay in federal taxes over the last decade? Beyond the politics, that's an irrelevant question.
It's been pushed high into the political discussion because of a back-alley allegation by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who claims the Republican presidential candidate has not paid federal taxes for 10 years.
How does he know that? Well, someone told him. Who? Well, he just won't say. But he knows it's true, so that should be that.
Except it is not. It's a tawdry political scheme intended to put Romney on the defensive. As such, it's on the same level with all the conservative claims about President Obama's birthplace. Reid's claim is despicable, especially when one considers that the Nevada politician refuses to release his own tax records............
