i dont know what kind of lights a tanning bed uses, but i imagine the electricity of keeping it on more than half a day would be alot. not to mention the heat it would put out

regardless heres how you would tell, are her plants strechy as hell?

sound like a huge lighting system that is gonna cost a shit load of money. I would say just have her invest in a Hps light. If you can afford a personal tanning bed you can afford a hps. btw how do you hang a tanning bed.

tanning bed lights are high intensity uv lights .... and can be very dangerous. Chronic exposure has the potential to cause serious injury to skimn and eyes. I would be very cautious of any extended use of such lights.

I am currently using uv lights. They are reptile lights and have significantly less output than the tanning bed lights. Tanning lights are powerful enuf that they tan you in 15 minute or 30 minute intervals. That's powerful. Conceptually, what we want is something that mimics the sunshine. I have a thread ongoing on thc, trichomes and uvb. That might be something to take a look at. My current grow is supplemented with 2 x 160W SolarGlo reptile lights ..... I need to get a SolarMeter to measure the actual uv in the grow area .... but I am pleased with the results.

However, I'm thinking that using the tanning bed lights might just be a little too powerful and with insufficient light energy in the other light spectrums to be useful for growing ..... Walk On!!~~

I would not use those lol, i bet they get very hot, shit load of electricity, prob not a good spectrum/lumens and all that stuff...just invest in cfl's if you were considering a tanning bed you can use all the electricity it woulda costed the first month and make a very sick setup haha

wow, thats the worst idea i've ever heard of for so many reasons, where to begin?

Honestly, tanning bed bulbs are NOT at all what you want. I have actually be in a tan bed before years ago (a gf at the time convinced me).

The good part is, the person won't waste too much time on it because the plants are going to die within a few days of sprouting.

THATS THE FUCKING FUNNIEST SHIT I'VE EVER HEARD OF!!!!!

I gotta say this thread makes me laugh big time. worth the price of admission. Hey, I have some pretty bright headlights on my suv. Why don't I just put my plants in front of my car with all the lights on and grow that way....lol. About the same stupid idea.....One month of high electric bills and dead plants el finish this idea off good. cockamamie ideas are sometimes the funniest.....

LMAO and years later........
Okay.
Well I dont know about growing with one. my sister owns a tanning bed and those things are F@#$ING HEAVY. The bottom part of the bed contains the ballasts. the top part is the bulbs. You would need to extend the power cables to run the bulbs unless you are comfortable hanging a the equivalent of a VW Bug from your ceiling

I don't think you would have enough wattage, unless the plants were within a couple inches, like if you were laying in it, but I gotta give her fucking thumbs up for having the idea and strength to hang that upside down, must've been quite a sight!

 I think I'm gonna hook up some Lightforce off-road lights to my T.V. and aim em at the wall. Yeah, makes about as much sense as a flipped over hanging tanning bed.

LMAO, so a friend of mines sister got a new tanning bed for Christmas. She gave him her old one for moving the old one out and installing the new one. Anyway, he ask me this same question, and I gave him the same answers I found in this thread

Massive power use- Its got its own special 220V 20amp circuit, and the timer which only goes up to 30min will have to be by-passed
Wrong spectrum- Likely to cook any plant even from 5ft away
Old bulbs- If I'm not mistaken the bulbs need to be changed out every couple years

Im going to check out his grow tomorrow. He currently has 2 super lemon haze and 2 white widow clones under it.
I think his best bet is to strip the ballast, tombstones, fans and reflectors out of the bed; go get some 4ft T12 HO grow lights, and build a good closet.

I'll keep you guys updated, this will be interesting
