Won't work for growing, they're just made to 'illuminate the beauty' of indoor plants, Compact Fluorescents (CFLs), Metal Halide or High Pressure Sodium (both High Intensity Discharge (HID) lights) are what you want.

You want around 8000 lumens per sq ft, or 50w of HID light per sq ft.

If you go with CFLs you want 6500k (kelvin) light spectrum, it's a blue-ish light and better for vegetative growth, then you want some 2700K CFLs for flowering, and lots of them.

If you go with HID the Metal Halide(more blue light) is better suited for vegetative growth and the HPS (more red light) is preferred for flowering, however lots of people use HPS lights for the entire grow, while relatively few people I know of use Metal Halide for the entire grow.

Good luck.

Thanks, yeah, I was asking for a friend and I already told him all of that, he didn't understand.

But I do have a question for myself. I have these tube fluorescents from a fish tank, all it says about them is that it's for plants and aquariums and it has a wide spectrum. Could I use this one? I've been using cfls but I don't have the right ones just yet (the ones I have are too far blue in the spectrum).

yes you can use the fish tank light , but olny for a while becouse it wont be strong enough to supply the plant with the proper amount of lumens, i would go witj what entropic said and get a hps light.

they sell cheap HPS at any lowes or home depot, they are in ht e outdoor lighting area they are used for security lighting as well they only have up to 100 watt HPS but for a small grow that is more than enough oher than that online is your best bet unless you have a hydroponics store around check out HTGSUPPLY.COM

you have to be careful installing these cheaper hps lights though, the compact ones without a ballast can get very hot, and my use more power than your wiring can handle depending on your setup, they take alot more to power than cfls
