Is that fishing line? Prob the worst thing to use for lst. Will cut right into the stems/stalks and won't allow you to really pull and control things the way u would want to. Its about right, the way u have it. But def lose that line. A good, cheap option is yarn. Can get a ton for $3 at all craft stores and some department stores.

Make little hooks out of coloured paperclips so the wire doesn't cut into the plant stem as it grows thicker.

Yeah, lose that. Use something much thicker or softer.
