Suggestions for 1st grow room?

Alright, about to start setting up for my first grow, and could use some suggestions on setting up. I'm not doing anything huge, was thinking I'd try a bubbleponics system, and I'm just aiming to grow enough to keep me stocked for personal use so I never have to buy again.

What I'm really asking here is, well.. I've read *tons* on how to grow, different ways of growing, etc, the whole science part of it.. But I don't have a clue how I should set up my closet as far as dividing it up into an efficient and consistent little grow. Such as how many plants overall, how many vegging\acting as mothers, how many clones vegging, how many flowering, etc. to really keep a constant supply. So that's what I'm really referring to as far as setting it up. Not every last little piece and part I should buy, but how to really set up a system to constantly have these ladies putting out. Also, any guesstimates on how much I could expect out of a harvest of this size would be nice, too. Now's probably a good time to say I'm aware different strains grow taller, fatter, have higher yields, etc and there's no real answer to this, I'm just aiming for an 'in general' response to all of this, as I'm starting with bagseed to learn on anyways.

Now, what I have to work with..

I've got a closet that's 4 feet wide, 3 feet deep, and about 5 feet from the floor before there's bars going across to hang stuff with. Above that, there's another 3-ish feet of clearance. It's justtt wide enough to fit three 10 gallon rubbermaids side by side, but I could probably find something smaller or not so wide, or even divide the closet with a shelf or something. Feel free to get creative with any ideas, I'd just like to get some input on what some experienced growers could\would do with the space I have compared to what my first thoughts were.

Anyways, I'd really appreciate any help\ideas\suggestions! Thanks ahead.

i would shoot for about 12 plants, 6 in veg and 6 in flower, with most strains you can pull out .5-1.5 oz per plant in about 60-70 days of veg/flower with that much room. that means maybe 6 oz every 2 month. how much do you smoke per day/week?
i would just start seedlings and veg for about 2 months then take clones and put the ones u cloned from into flower and the clones into veg.

That's more than I was hoping for, really.. I was mostly hoping I'd get at least an ounce or two a month. I'm just that much more excited to get started now, thanks!

Also like your suggestion of just taking clones off of the plants I'm about to switch to flowering, opposed to how most of everyone talks about having a mother for all your cuttings. Just because of that, I was thinking I'd end up with two containers for vegging. One for mothers and one for clones, then having a 3rd for flowering.

That's also what made me curious though, I was reading Roseman's guide on Bubbleponics and I believe it was 8 gallon rubbermaids he had 6 plants each in. I've got the room to fit 3 of those in there, so is there a reason you were suggesting 12 instead of 18? Was thinking doing that I could have two for vegging, so that they've been in veg and grown up a bit more by the time I move them to flowering. Rather than using up every inch, should I aim to leave a decent bit of space around the tubs?

i said 6 because thats how many i do at a time, i have 6 in veg and 6 in flower, keep them going continuosly. you do generally want to keep a little bit of space around them to make it easier to work around them, fixing pumps, checking lvls that sort of thing, also i would use one tub for vegging and 2 for flower as the plants do keep growing while in flower. 2 months is plenty of time for the clones to veg before flowering, like i said probly .5-1.5oz a plant. the chem dawg clone i am experimenting with right now has only been vegging for 2 weeks and im already puting it into flower, not expecting more than a quater out of that one though scince im testing different things on it.

Your yield is very dependent on strain , If you want really big yields you need to go to a reputable seedbank and buy a good indoor strain that will be easy to grow believe me its worth then investment. The attitude seedbank is the way to go. You can buy a single seed and they always throw in a killer dank freebie. My 1st order was around 24 bucks for seeds and shipping and took 6 days to get. I also suggest soil or Miracle Gro potting mix (anything but the organic, to strong) as your medium maybe with a small hydro setup just to learn at 1st. Thats my 2 cents. Dont buy LED's, Try to get an HID 1st but if not get a fluorescent with 6500k color spectrum for veg and switch bulbs to 2100 to 2700k for flower.

the man speaks the truth, thats why there was such a broad range of how much you can yield, you are going to want either a halide set up with a couple t5s to suplement it or a multiple tube t5 setup for veg and then a slightly sronger hps to flower with, i usually runa couple daylight spectrum bulbs as well while flowering, helps keep the leaves from yellowing so fast.

lol that's a good point, guess I'm just getting overly excited and wanting to max out. Didn't even think about how much of a pain in the ass it'd be trying to reach around and mess with everything if it was that tight. Thanks for pointing out the obvious I was overlooking, lol..

Yeah, I figured as much with the yields, I couldn't help but ask though. Like I said I just wanted an 'in general' response. Thanks for the suggestion on the seedbank, too. I've been looking at a few and debating who to try if all goes well with the bagseed. Or are you suggesting I don't even waste time and just go straight to ordering quality seeds? If so, any suggestions on an easy to grow strain to start with? Also, it really safe to order from a seedbank online using a credit card, real name, and address? Customs won't seize it, take note of the address, and bust down my door? lol..

haha, no. every one thinks that, they are not going to bust down your door for 5-10 seeds. i suggest you start with bagseed and see how green you thumb is, no point wasting money till you find out if you can do it. learn on the cheap stuff first i say.

lol idk, I'm paranoid when it comes to cops, I've got the worst luck with them. I've had the K-9 unit pulled on me after being pulled over for not wearing my seat belt. To me it'd be the smart thing to do if I was a cop and wanted to be a dick, though. If someone's ordering seeds, chances are they've got plans for them, that's what I'd think lol..

But yeah, I was thinking the same.. Spend less and hope for the best, see how I do, then try my hand at a quality strain once I'm confident enough that I won't just waste them.

Yeah, I definitely will.. Most of everything I've learned so far has been from reading stuff on these forums, so I definitely wanna return the favor and contribute. Just hoping it'll be the contribution of a success story and not a tale on failure of epic proportions lol..

every one kills atleast one grow, well if not every one most people do, there is usually more to be learned from failure than succes, keep that in mind.

Yeah, true.. I'm still hoping to be a rare prodigy or just one of the really lucky ones, though.. haha :D

Anyways, thanks again for the replies and I'll definitely start up a journal once I've decided on everything, cleaned up, and get this whole thing going, probably within the next week or two.

Yes if u go with Miracle gro the 1st time u just have to worry about watering really and temps. You may need sum bloombooster fert for when u go into flower. I use Miracle Gro bloombooster . Ph will be no prob. Ya dont waste your precious time on bagseed. Buy u 1 feminized seed and get that freebie also u should have 2 females that will grow great indoors. The freebie they sent called LA woman is growing like mad, Has already grown 3 times its size in flower and still goin its incredible, Its been in 12/12 for only 3 weeks !!! I will upload sum pics soon. But heres sum old pics of 2 ez to grow strains g13 white widow, and LA woman:bigjoint::-P

Wow, so this is coming out to be a lot more expensive to set up than I thought it would be.. got everything i'd need loaded up in an amazon shopping cart right now, minus my 2700K CFLs, closest they had in stock was 3000K.. would that still be good enough or should I just run to the store and get 2700Ks?

anyways i'm at $420 (I know, right? lol) before shipping right now..

anything that'd be more or less of a necessity? trying to think about how I could cut down on costs to get started in case i'm not too great at it.. but not sure exactly what I could hold off on and still be good to grow..

anyways, gonna make a list of the items in my cart along with the price.. i'd appreciate it if anyone could look over it and tell me what i'd be fine growing without at first to start off and make sure i'm capable, or yeah even point me towards anything i could get cheaper.. or if i left anything out or bad brands, etc.. I know I didn't have a digital pH or PPM meter, they seemed like they wouldn't be essentials, but moreso convenience items that i could purchase later once I was sure it wouldn't be money wasted.. Also with the lighting, planned to have 2 reflectors with 2 65 watt CFLs each over each tub of 6 plants - would this be enough light? Or could I get away with less light, even? Was planning on dividing the closet directly in half for this, one side vegging one side flowering.

Anyways, here's what I got so far.. Items with more than 1 has prices listed in bold:

Gulfstream Home & Garden #7801 2OZ Rooting Hormone $4.49
pH Control Kit by General Hydroponics $17.00
Leviton 128-00I Twin Light Outlet Socket Adapter, Ivory x 4 @ $2.79

Lasko 12" Oscillating Table Fan $18.00
Round Net Pots 3.75 inch, Heavy Duty x 12 @ $0.60 (Couldn't find 4-inch, next up was 5.. this good or should I have went for the 5s?)

Add-a-Stone Airstone - 10 in. x 2 in. x 12 in. x 4 @ $3.89
Chaney Indoor Thermometer with Humidity $12.99
Active Aqua Air Dual Outlet Air Pump $15.00
Grodan Rockwool - 1.5in. Individually wrapped cubes, 45 pack $11.50
Sunterra 301220 1/2" PVC Tubing for Water Gardening - 20' Roll, Black $10.00

EcoPlus Submersible Water Pump - 185gph x 2 @ $13.35
Hydroton Grow Rock 10 liters $8.75
Belkin 6-Outlet Home/Office Surge Protector with Rotating Plug and 8' Cord $12.77
Ortho 0195310 1-1/3-Gallon Home Defense Max Perimeter and Indoor Insect Killer Pull 'N Spray $17.95
Maxi Gro 4 Pound, 10-5-14 $28.99
MaxiBloom - 1.5 lb $26.78
Intermatic TN111GC Lamp and Appliance Timer with 2 On/Off Settings, Easy Set Lighted Dial x 2 @ $6.02
2 mil Mylar 25ft $19.89
Roughneck Storage Box, 10 Gal x 2 @ $13.49

Subtotal: $420.57 (ACK! Especially after shipping was added? Ouch.)

Anyways, like I said, I'd really just like to cut the price down a bit if I can. Knew I'd be spending some money, but I was expecting something closer to maybe $100, $200 tops lol.. Especially when the stealth hydro bubbleponics kits which are nearly the same as what I'll be setting up are only $100 each for the most basic kit. Would it for whatever reason be cheaper to just buy a Stealth Hydro system instead?

Could really use some advice on what would make this a bit less costly on me from the start, what I could put off buying until after I'm more confident, anything I might not need at all or anything I forgot, anything I could get cheaper elsewhere or could use a different brand etc-ness. Really appreciate any help\advice\suggestions I can get. I wanna try growing, I'd just rather not break my pockets with setting it up when I'm not even sure I'll be able to successfully grow at this point.

3000k is OK for Flowering.

anyways i'm at $420 (I know, right? lol) before shipping right now..
You could seriously reduce that $ by just starting with one tank, or one tank and one 5 gallon bucket, or two 5 gallon buckets, but with two tanks, you could bet $4000 to $6000 worth of buds.

anything that'd be more or less of a necessity? trying to think about how I could cut down on costs to get started in case i'm not too great at it.. but not sure exactly what I could hold off on and still be good to grow..

For VEG, it is OK, but need more for Flowering.Or could I get away with less light, even? Was planning on dividing the closet directly in half for this, one side vegging one side flowering. That is not as easy as it sounds, dividing the clsoet in half, and making one half totally dark.

You will need an extension cord, duct tape, and sun glasses.

You could consdier starting with one or two 5 gallon buckets to reduce the expense.

Thanks much for the reply! The extension cord, sunglasses, and duct tape I've already got around the house, that's why they weren't on the list. Thanks for being so thorough, though.

Thanks for the confirmation on 3000K being fine, as well. Could you give me a suggestion on how much lighting would be sufficient in my scenario for flowering? There'd be 4 3000K 65 watt CFLs in two reflectors right now. Would just one more reflector, two more bulbs, be sufficient? That was the main bit of the guide that boggled my brain a bit, trying to figure out how much light would be sufficient in my scenario, and what size bulbs these reflectors could actually handle, etc. Is there a simple rule of thumb to go by? Like X watts per plant\reflector? Also, with the dual spectrum bit, was that just talking about having 2700K and 6500K lights involved in the entire process? Or was it saying it'd be most beneficial to have both spectrums at once in either the Vegging or Flowering phase? That and the nutes, I just googled the NPK you said you were using, found a brand using that exact ratio, and added those to my list lol..

Also, very good point with the $4k-6k worth of buds, I never did the math or even thought of how much I'd be saving by growing my own lol.. Just wow. At the very least, I'm not feeling the need to be as restrictive with my spendings now. I just need to practice telling myself that it won't be as hard as I'm imagining and hope I'll successfully grow some bud, lol..

CFLs = 60 to 65 lumens per watt.
You need a bare minimum of 3000 lumens per sq ft of grow space and 5000 lumens per sq ft is excellent. Do the math.

Both spectrums at the same time, or 60-40% depending on the cycle you are in.
Read page 7 and 8 here:
L I G H T S Page 7

and I am in my 8th grow today and I will spend less than $150 to get a pound of buds!
The first grow is the most expensive.

rawrrrz, i use about 35% yellow or 3000k light to 65% blue or 6400k for veg, and the other way around for flower, seems to work great. the yellow spectrums help swell the buds while the plants need blue light for cell integrity while flowering, compare bud flowered under yellow light to bud flowered under both spectrums and you will see a huge difference in the color and quality. good luck man.
