Don't lower the light too much though.
Generally speaking lower the light, put your hand at the top of the plant, if it's too hot for your hand, it'll most likely be too hot for the plant.

well i lowered it and did the hand thing..... its warm not hot right above the plants, kinda like when u start to tan the nice warm heat.

If it's heat that equals what you would feel from the sun that's fine as long as it has enough roots. 1.5' is the kind of distance a 1000w bulb would need, you should be half that. If half that is too hot you need a more powerful fan on the tops and on the bulb or maybe vent the hood with a fan and duct. I am using 250w halides now and those I keep within 4", you're probably aiming for the 8"-10" mark.

Should be fine. My bulbs are about 12 to 14 in from the tops. 400w HPS. I kept them about there for the vegging as well with MH. As long as the tops aren't burnt, getting them as close as possible is common advice on almost every growing forum. Must be true.
