Storing cannabis in plastic vs glass

WalMart shows a case of 6 - 1/2 gallon jars for $14.00.

For ~$60, you can get 4 of those cases. 24 lids to pop off when you burp 'em is better than 50 lids. And each 1/2 gallon jar filled to about 3/4 full will hold just a nose under 3 oz.
I just picked up a sixer of these guys at the local Walmart a couple weeks ago. That half gallon size is nice!!

Couldn’t agree more. Around here canning season is the only time they are around like any other seasonal. Online seems doable but im curious how many arrive intact

Probably the best price you will get is from Wally World (Wal-Mart), you can order on-line and then pick them up at the store, you'll know if any are broken.

I like jars for my small scale, personal use. Can totally understand the five gallon buckets for bigger grows.

I’ll choose glass over plastic any time it’s an option. I’m actively trying to avoid plastic, but it’s challenging. Disturbed by how much plastic is wasted in some of the commercial packaging. Plastic sucks for the environment.

Newbie question here. It seems universally agreed that dried cannabis should be stored in air tight glass containers to preserve its quality, but why is this exactly? Or is this a common myth to begin with?

Would there be any downsides to store a large amount of weed for a long time in, say, a gallon plastic container vs a gallon glass mason jar?
lots of reasons. figured out over decades by old fucks. go glass

I agree but trains of thought can change. I use food grade buckets never noticed any reason to suspect the buckets are poisoning me . I cant really see how a sealed vessel with monitored conditions could matter. Ive heard old fucks and new ones say light is bad? I cant prove one way or the other but if they’re right than buckets win and clear glass means total darkness is a must

I doubt anything air is going through a 5gl bucket idk the gamma lids have a gasket. I keep feed in the same setup( dif buckets of course) outside yr round and it doesn’t get wet so good enough for me
I use buckets with turkey bags then after trimming jars placed into buckets with gamma lids to protect it from the light.

I use whatever is available. I've had weed for over a year in non air tight plastic shoeboxes, mason jars, turkey bags, washed pickle or soup jars, ziplocs, picnic salad tubs, and pyrex containers. Newly trying out grove bags. It has yet to matter, except where the plastic picks up a smell (these become dedicated weed containers.)

I probably have super plasticancer D;

Once had brick pallet weed that reeked of actual diesel fuel. Pretty sure it made it's way into the country in a tank truck. Sadly can't say it didn't get smoked.

for large amounts I use turkey bags with the majority of air sucked out of them, not enough to compress the weed just enough to make less footprint, along with a boveda 62% pack , I store them in 27 gal totes , I have cannabis from 5 years ago thats still great to smoke stored this way

Where using glass canning jars makes sense is for long term storage (a year or more). Plastic containers and even zip lock bags work just fine for storage and transport but as the months go by unless the container has been sealed in some way (vacuum pack etc) the cannabis inside will dry out. Zip lock bags are great but it is not an air tight seal. For most grows, especially those done to make money, long term storage isn’t normally a problem. They don’t grow to hold on to it but instead to sell it as quickly as possible. It’s the user who wants to store their stash or the home grower looking to harvest enough to last them till next year who is going to take the time for glass storage. I’ve kept cannabis I’ve grown sealed in glass jars for as long as 18 months and I was unable to notice any degradation in quality from when I’d first jar’d it up. It still was slightly moist and tacky when ground.

plastic bags steal tricones from the cannabis it holds!
