yes. do NOT tip your servers. wtf?! i've worked in the restaurant/hospitality business for over 10 years... why on earth would you recommend people not to tip their servers? that's how they make their money! they usually get paid around $3 and hour from the establishment and rely on tips to make a living...

what if the person isn't carrying cash? i would say the majority of people today which eat out at fine dining restaurants will rather pay with plastic than paper. If your wife feels like she is being cheated she needs to prove it. keeps copies of every bill from every table she waits. compare that to the payout she gets from plastic tips. it's very easy to see if you are being cheated out of your tips or not. very easy to prove, seen many girls do it at the places i've worked at behind the line.

Every restaurant I ever worked at the server was the one who added up all the charges at the end of the night and got tipped out by the cashier.

Well if you don't have $5 cash don't go out and eat.
She does keep tabs on what she gets but she just started working less than a month ago and hasn't gotten her tips yet, so we will see, but I just feel like the manager thinks that after 1 month the wait staff might lose count.

Her charge tips go to her paycheck? That fuckin sucks. Its so much nicer to get tipped out every night by the cashier. I'm sure paying the taxes on tips is why the credit card tips get paid out in the paycheck. Sucks.

yeah i've worked the restaurant scene and you get to see a printout of your sales. at the POS it's somewhere when you swipe your card. tap it and it prints it out right there with the receipt machine.
and it's 2.14 per hour + tips at most restaurants......
you should keep a ballpark of all tips received that night and if your cash on hand at the end of the night isn't your bank + tips and you don't say shit then it's on you.....

I hate tipping for the simple fact you get conned into it by the cheap ass restaurant owners and people who bitch about "cheap asses." They should make minimum wage and if it is such a crunch on the owners pocket then he can up the costs of meals a few bucks. Not stiff the servers on wage and rely on the customers to cover his/her employees wages.
I think a more practical solution would be to get rid of servers altogether. Install a pager on each table and when the tables food is ready activate their pager and have them come to a kitchen window to pick it up. Not to mention I would much prefer to tip the cook as opposed to the server. This would also give the cook more incentive to not slop some shit on a plate.

Living in Australia, I don't understand the concept of tipping.
When I pay for a meal I pay the restaurant and they pay the staff whatever they are worth.
I don't feel the need to track down the cleaner and tip them for cleaning the toilet.
If I buy a meal that is twice as expensive as another meal, it still takes the wait staff the same effort to serve it so why should they be tipped based on the price of the meal - they should be paid a realistic wage with the menu prices increased to enable that wage to be paid.
Not many Australians tip, then again we have such things as minimum wages.
