Stealth Grow ODOR Advice Needed Please

Hey Everyone,

Hope you all can help. I took a medium sized fridge and gutted the whole thing out. No more plastic, insulation etc. Now it's just a metal box and it's totally sealed.

I can fit 4 plants in this box from the calculations I did. My main concern is odor. Live in a house with an old woman as a roomie who is in her room basically 24-7. I have a lock on my door and my grow fridge is locked too. I can vent into the attic or outside from my closet, already checked. I have to be totally odor free. Any recommendations? Any help would be great. Thanks

Yes. You should buy a carbon filter. You decide how much you wanna spend on one. It could cost you 20 bucks if you do it yourself, or it could cost like 200 bucks if you buy some legit system. Either way, it won't smell too bad during vegetative stage, but when it starts flowering, you should have some ONA (Odor Neutralizing Agent). Stuff works wonders.

Thanks for the reply. Are there any threads here on how to make your own filter? Also, does anyone vent into their attic? If so, does it take the odor out, and do the neighbors get a whiff, or does it just go airborn and be smell free?

I will post pics of my box soon so you have an idea of what I'm building.

yeah. Most of those questions are situational. If your venting is passing through a carbon filter then there should be little smell left. And no matter what, you really should get some ONA to be safe.
As for DIY carbon filters, there are many threads on this site for that. Look under the DIY sub forum. I personally think its easier to buy a carbon prefilter. this is what I am currently using and it works great. http://www.hamiltonbeach.com/accessories-febreze-trueair-replacement-filters.html

and btw, People vent into their attic all of the time.

Hey thanks jr22hockey and Joe Camel. I like the ideas! Now, if I vent into the attic, how will the smell be for the neighbors? I checked out the roof and the attic here and there is alot of circulation up there. The roof has 2 of those round metal spinners that takes the heat out of the attic. It has good circulation too. I fired up a stinky ass cigar to check the smoke flow and out it went. Just wondering if this would work the same during the summer as it can get real hot here. I will post pics before I start the grow. For lighting, I will be using 2 or 3 cfl's, and changing them to the right ones for vegging and for flowering. Any thoughts on the light aspect?

Again, thanks for the help...more will be needed since this is my 1st try at this super stealth grow fridge.

How much do you want to yield? Because 2-3 CFLs won't yield much, unless they are 68 watt (300 watt equivalent) CFLs.

And the answer to your odor concerns, as already stated, is to get or make a good carbon filter. You will also need a good fan. Going stealth can get costly quickly!

Carbon filter plus ozone should take care of your worries. Look for a thread on diy walmart carbon filter, they are cheap to make and work well.

I'll be planting WW or BUB-cious-4 to 6 plants. They stay short with lots of bud and are said to have huge yields under "ideal" conditions. Here are the specs on the cfl's I want to use. The lumens are right up there and they are different bulbs for flow'g and veg. I will probably use 4 to 6 of each cfl, maybe 8, who knows, lol.

These CFL grow lights are available in 125 & 200 watt models. The 2700k bulb provides increased output in the red spectrum which promotes flowering & budding in plants. The 6400k & 5000K bulbs are full spectrum bulb which promotes overall plant growth. 125 watt bulbs are 8,500 lumens. 200 watt bulbs are 12,800 lumens. Average life is 10,000 hours. Requires a larger mogul fixture or socket and 110/120 volt outlet. Size 14" x 4" (125w) 14" x 5" (200w)

I can send the link if any of you need it. What do recommend for a nice quiet fan for about 6 sq feet or so of area?

If you are really paranoid about the smell you can vent thru the sewage pipe, raw sewage will usually cover the smell pretty well unless you are growing the dankest of dank.................

Hi,

Ya, saw a thread here with a make your own excellent filter. As far as getting rid of smell, I have a few options. Right in the closet, where the modified fridge will be, I have very easy access to the attic which is very well ventilated along with access to the outside all within 3 feet up and back. Should I put the carbon filter in the attic, or just blow it up there from a 4" dryer hose setup. I will also have 3 120 cfm super quiet computer fans for intake, 4 if needed, I have the room. I'm lining the modified fridge with sun reflector material you use on a car windshield. I will post pics tonight sometime as the project develops.

Hey in terms of light, if you're going to use CFL's I would recommend using 2-3 high wattage CFLs. It just makes things simpler plus they have more lumens. 5000k will work, but is not very good. I'd get a 100 watt 6500k and a 100 watt 2700k and just run the, both through the whole grow. If you want you could but some supplemental spetrum lighting for each stage of growing like an extra 42 watt 2700k bulb or something. They're only 6 bucks here (before tax).

I dont wanna rain on anyones parade...

But, IMHO,..There is no such thing as a stealth grow, especially when the stink of flowering comes into effect.

I have seen many posts similar to this one. You CANT hide that smell all the way.. No matter what, you will ALWAYS smell a hint of marijuana...

I would never suggest a stealth grow because of situations like this one. Either you empty out a closet, Grab an hps and grow out some real yield, or just forget it. Its a hard pill to swallow.. But this is "usually" how it is. Hope it all works out for you. CG :)

I am looking forward to the pics.

And stealthy is super tough and can get more expensive than non-stealthy, but it is doable. I usually have new visitors take a tour of my apartment and when we get done they want to know where that grow I told them about was.
