Kron- Not all induction bulbs are equal quality. But they do need a ballast, same as CFLs do. The big difference between them is if you don't use a surge protector on CFLs you not only risk burning out your bulb in a surge, but the possibility of the bulb exploding and contaminating your grow area with mercury. That's a nightmare I don't want any part of.
I understand your concerns of expense, but I asked Will Phinney at inductionlamps.com about his bulbs, and he said short lived bulbs were uncommon among the ones he's sold. I got my money back from hydroponicshut.com, and they were good about it, but I haven't given up on induction bulbs. I'm going to see how the smaller bulbs do, then consider moving up. Plants do love the light.
