Starting seeds in rockwool cubes

So i'm going to be starting seeds in rockwool cubes for the first time, and I just want to make sure I'm going to be doing it right. I will not be germinating them before putting them in the cubes.

My plan is to just completely drench my rockwool cubes in water with the appropriate pH level. And then put the seeds in and let them germinate inside the cubes. I will then let them grow out to about a clones size and then transplant them into dirt. Which I'm not even sure if that will work - yet I don't see why it wouldn't work. I've only heard of people going from rockwool cube to a hydro system but I don't see why I can't go from rockwool cube into soil...

Let me know if this plan will work or if I should tweak it in anyway..

Thanks for all the help fellow RIU'ers.

it would work, but why not just use jiffy pellets? they are cheap as shit and work well.

awesome man i'm definitely going to use the peat pellets. now once my seeds grow out to about clone size in the peat pellets - do i have to be careful about what soil i transplant them into? i don't want shock them. i'm planning on transplanting right into Fox Farms Ocean Forest. with that type of soil i won't be shocking the plant at all right?

this is my first time using dirt to grow that's the only reason why i'm asking all this haha. i just don't wanna screw up my first dirt grow.

sorry brother, not a dirt grower.. I have read good things about fox farm, but as far as which is which... I can't give solid advice on that.. Someone will help you out I'm sure..

Weird thing.. on my last grow I was out of rockwool and had to make due with what I had.. (jiffy pellets for the wife's flowers) and I put them in with the rockwool and they actually did really well.. no peat in my res, and I think it helped the two that I had give a jump start as seedlings..

I mix Ocean Forrest with Happy Frog 50/50. Works great. Don't have to start feeding for about a month. A little longer if I add some guanos to the mix.

awesome awesome i think i will do the same. now when you start feeding - what type of nutrients and what mix ratio do you feed it? like what products do you use to feed it? i've heard of people just using a miracle grow mix. but i want to hear what more people do.

what type of fertilizers do you feed it with and how much water do you mix and all that?

haha like i said it's my first time growing in dirt. i decided to do hydro first and i feel like i missed out on a important aspect of natural growth - so i'm trying a dirt grow.

anyways i appreciate all this info a lot and hope i'm not being toooo particular or asking too much haha.
thanks again.

I am a relatively new grower but have done tons of research and this is what I have found:

There is no point in germinating/starting seeds in rockwool if you are going to grow in soil. Think about it.. what is the reason? Germinate your seeds in the good ol' paper towel method and then start them in soil. This will tell you what seeds are good and potable. Next, buy some small, plastic cups and fill with your soil mix. Fox Farm Ocean forest is fine but Happy Frog gave me nute burn late in the grow. I dont have either in my area and it was difficult finding a soil that did not come pre mixed with nutes. I finally got a good one and have added 20% Perlite, 20% Coco Coir, and 10% worm castings. ~1 1/2 weeks since they sprouted and doing awesome. Thinking about starting a journal but idk kinda sketchy. Everything can be used against you on the net now adays.

When I start feeding a plant, there are a few things I always use. CalMag, liquid seaweed, and molasses. My concoction of other ferts include at any given time, high n guano, high p guano, Liquid Kahrma, fish emulsion, and superthrive if needed. The ratios and specifics all just depend on age of plant, stage of growth, etc. My favorite guidline for organic feeding is DSG's tea recipes. https://www.rollitup.org/organics/225816-dsgs-overview-basic-guano-tea.html The rest of the stuff I use is kinda up in the air, but it works for me. I hope this has helped somewhat. Sorry it took me so long to hit you back. Any more q's just shoot me another PM. :joint:

Ya I know it works but really.. whats the point of adding another step (rockwool) to a soil grow? I havent heard a good argument for it.

rockwool is better because you can keep a tab on the roots jus to make sure t is actually doin jus that and not jus takin up space in the grow innit!

Rockwool keeps moisture well and is cheap/clean way of starting out seeds/clones. Besides that is the point you want tight healthy roots, in a small rockwool cube you can see when the roots outgrow it, and therfore know when there compact enough to transplant to a bigger medium.
