Starting indoor, moving outdoor... help please

Noob questions, so be gentle please...

Because of a late start and shitty weather, I am starting my plants indoors, wanting to move them outside as they mature and conditions improve. So, some questions:

1. I'm using a single 400w HPS setup, growing 4 seedlings (all that sprouted from a bag of 10 seeds). What cycle of light/dark should I be using, given that I intend to move them outdoor? At present I am running 18/6, but the outdoor site gets maybe 10-12 hours of direct sunlight, so I don't want to shock them or send them right to flowering once they get in the ground.

2. How big should the seedlings get before you transplant them into the wild?

3. Any suggestions on how close to the seedlings the light should be? I've read the grow FAQ, but looking for some hands on experience if possible.

A bit of a crossover indoor/outdoor question. Any suggestions appreciated.

I have made many posts with the same questions, and here is what i did (mine are already out side)

1. i used a 400w mh (u can use the HPS as well) and had the light on 16-8

2. I transplanted mine when they were about 6 inches tall - i had 9 and they all survived transplant and are very healthy right now.

3. i had the light, which was MH (metal Halide) very close, about 18 inches away, there was hardly any browning and the plants seemed to love it...

that worked for me, gl

hey man just run it 18/6 till you have four or five sets of leaves then they can go outside and start to give it some nutes. they will do great in a forest.

Cool, thanks for that. Right now the light is maybe 3 feet off the seedlings, but I want to make optimum use of the light, obviously. I will try lowering it a bit.
