Just started veg on 18-6 and a friend has recommended using my sodium lamp instead of the cfl I'm using ATM. Currently the cfl is approx 18 inches away from plants. Obvious the sodium wud create a lot more heat so wud need to be raised but I dni wether to swap or not??? I would gain some much needed heat with sodium aswel. Help pls thanks

The CFL needs to be closer than 18", more like 3" to start if they just broke the soil, then after a few days more like 2" away is best. What are your temps now?

You could use the HPS as long as it is far enough away and the temps do not get too high. Usually it is best to wait until the second true set of leaves is developing but some people do use the HPS from seed and have no problems. What wattage is the HPS and how big is the grow area?

Good luck

Yeah, your CFL is way too far away. Honestly, I think the CFL will work better spectrum-wise, but if the HPS fixes a temp problem, go for it. You will need to watch your distance with the HPS if you use it this early.

Its all to do with the size of the light ...most cfl's are household 24w cfl's that are built to be used in rooms, etc if you are using one lower to within 1-2 inches so you don't burn the plant, keep a small fan in there plants gotta breathe too

Hps is 600w dual spectrum, grow tent is 1500x1500 loft tent . The plants are rooted cuttings so roots are developing thru the block into small pots of canna soil. After a week I planned on moving them into full size pots. Lights on thru night so hps wud up the temp but temp may get a lil too high during the day. I work all day so tryin to find a happy medium. I cud put a small table under the plants to lift them a lot closer to bulb

I would use CFL's for vegging and your hps for flower.... thats just my .02 cents. But you did say you needed to raise your temps then cfls may not be the answer.... or add more. And yea, they NEED to be like 3 inches away.

Either upload a pic to a hosting website and use the link or you can upload right from your comp. Theres an image of a picture on the toolbar. Click it.
