Hey people. Ive been doing a bit of browsing and am now interested in giving growing a shot. Ive seen lots of suggestions to new growers. I do have a question that I havent seen an answer to as of yet.

Can someone give me a ballpark idea of the TOTAL cost of starting up (lights, pots, soil, expected increase in utility charges etc.)? I would like to use quality equipment but not the top of the line stuff. So....can anyone throw some numbers out there for me? BTW....Im in Texas, US.

Depends on what you want to do. How many plants. If you already have a grow area and don't need a box and want to grow about 5 or 6 plants, you can use either CFLs or HPS, which is the preferred light for flowering indoors. It can be anywhere from about $150 to $500 for a small operation. If you go big (commercial), could be about $2k - $5k depending on your equipment. These are very rough estimates.

Thanks for the reply....I was only planning on starting a few plants of some boo-boo bud. Hopefully I could practice and use trial/error on them without getting pissed if I loose all the plants.

I'll be growing in either the closet of my 2nd unused bedroom. The closet is cramped but the room is spacious. This is for my personal use only....not selling anything. What about the increase in the utility bill? Lets say its an even $100 per month now....adding the lighting will roughly make my bill rise to bout what? Roughly. And thanks again.

Well my setup which is aero 28 plants site cost me about little less then $1000 us.Thats everything to build the aero system with pumps ,3 400 watt hps lights with bulbs and hoods included, nutes, fans, building materials, and a co2 injection system.Costs about $60 a month to run it.I take that back about $80 when co2 needs refill.

A grand is a bit steep for my 1st go round. I know you get out what you put in but being that I dont have a killer seed yet....all that would be wasted on boo-boo bud.

Yeah a grand might be much for a very first grow but Im a few past so have added over time and saved some dollars here and there to get to the current setup.Id say for a simple 3-6 plant soil grow maybe. $250 to do it half way correct. You ll need at least 1 400 watt hps light which is the main thing.Anywhere from $30 -$250 for a setup.buckets are like 3 bucks for 5 gallon bucket and figure $40-60 for good soil. Then maybe $40 for good set of nutes then you pretty good rest you probably have like a fan and measuring cups.
