Start seedlings under 12/12, then put outside?

Hi folks,

I'm flowering two nice plants right now, hoping to finish em up before it gets real hot in my area in June. My question is, can I use this 12/12 flower area to start my outdoor seedlings? I'm hoping if I start 10 or 12 Northern Lights seeds, I can grow em up to about a foot tall under 12/12, by which point they will hopefully have showed sex, and then put them outside in June when the light is about 16-17 hours a day in my area (45 deg north). So will this work with the 12 hour HPS light? If so, it saves me having to run my other light 18 hrs a day, and it seems like the plants would show sex faster and I could pull the males indoors before wasting money on soil to put them outdoors. Thanks for any advice!!

Good question, I was always wondering this too maybe it will revert to veg and not keep flowering when you put it outdoors early. If they are autoflowering then they will definitely keep flowering once put outdoors.

I asked a similar question a couple of days ago.
One reply said it would reduce yield.
Somebody else said it might make plants go hermaphrodite.

hmmm I definitely don't want either of those things. I feel like there's such a long veg time outside though that starting them under 12/12 for like a month and then having them veg under natural light for like 2.5 months isn't gonna be a big problem. I might try it out, and I bet I'd get good results. A lot of people in warmer climates start seedlings outdoors pretty early under maybe 13-14 hour days and the day length gradually increases until solstice. Also, Northern lights can take a lot of stress and do fine... any body else ever tried this? I have a metal halide setup in my room for veggin but it's not stealth and it affects my sleep because it's just behind a thick tapestry, so if I can get away without running it this spring I'd be way better off. Thanks again for the responses.

I let my seedlings flower outside, killed the males, put them under 24 hr light and reverted them back to the veg state. Once they were a foot tall i brought them back outdoors transplanted them in to big pots and they just went nuts in growth. but you gotta put them in a shaddy area after the indoor veg for about a week or they will die.

You will be fine trust me. I do it all the time. Sex them then flip them back to veg.

i am doing the same thing my plants are only like 2 weeks old. but i need to veg until a foot tall or so and put into flower to show the sex and then re-vert back to veg. if the light cycle is to long when you put them outside they might re-veg even though you started to flower indoors anhow good luck

okay sweet. I'm just trying to minimize electricity usage wherever I can. I'll probably run the veg light for two more weeks anyway, so I'll start em out under that, then throw em under 12 hour lights until they show very first signs of flowering, then, depending on the weather, I'll either put them back under 18/6 MH for a couple more weeks or just put them in pots and throw em in the woods! Thanks for the responses, I'm sure it'll work out just fine, just gotta think positive and I'll have a pound of beautiful outdoor buds on my hands come october!
