I'm planing to mix up one bag of FF OF to make a small quantity of Subcool's revised SS. I have all the ingredients he lists except Light Warrior which I simply can't find in my area.

What can I substitute?

More FF OF
Perlite
Peat Moss ( some posted that he does this)

Appreciate any advice.

Can you get Black Gold Seedling mix in your area? I use two small bags to one FFOF or happy frog. Also, if you can get happy frog instead, I'd get that over FFOF anyday. It's cheaper and I think it's a much better base for the SSS recipe than the FFOF/.

Great! Black gold is available at all the local stores. Someone is bound to have the seedling mix. And I've seen Happy Frog. FFOF is hard to find and $25/bag!

Thanks!

Id try 1/2 OF and 1/2 LW myself
I do not use peat moss

perlite is just non nutrient media, 20 years ago Ed wrote that Cannabis likes a well drained media and people have been over doing since :)

Yes while the soil needs ariation to much perlite or vermiculite just takes up root space IMO

No Bio bizz products or Happy Frog huh?

Light Warrior is just peat moss and perlite plus bennies. Just buy those two separate then get Epsoma Bio-tone Starter. They sell it at Lowes. It has the bennies plus other goodies like alfalfa meal and greensand. All of that will still probably be cheaper than a bag of LW.

And if you want to take Sub's suggestion of not using any peat moss, just substitute coco coir for it. OF doesn't have any and Sub recommends that coir be in whatever base soil you use. It does many great things for your mix.

Good luck with your recipe!

@subcool I can get Happy Frog & FF OF. I haven't seen FF LW anywhere.

I thought perlite also made the soil light and airy which is kinder to the roots although it reduces the nutrient density? I've typically been useing 25% for mature plants and 50% for seedlings. What do you say?

Well I mixed up 1 bag of SS today using FF OF. I adjusted subcool's recipe for 1.5 bags of soil. When I get hold of some happy frog or black gold, I will add another half bag of that to the mix.

For easier mixing, I mixed all the small ingredients, like azomite, humic acid powder etc very thoroughly with a qt of soil and then mixed that with the bone meal, blood meal and worm castings. Otherwise it's hard to mix 3 tsp of powder with 10gal of soil and get an even mix. With this all mixed up thoroughly, I layered it with the potting soil and mixed it up on a piece of scrap plywood, added 1 gal of water since it's bone dry here in the SW and put it in a black plastic trash can to cook in the sun.

I did add 1/2 cup of Mykos mycorrhizae to the mix.

Other than the potting soil, I had little trouble finding the ingredients. Bone meal etc at a nearby nursery. Azomite & humic acid in small quantities from ebay.

Local hardware store has ordered smoe BG Seedling Mix potting soil. Half the price of OF. When it arrives, I will mix it into the SS. I've seen Happy Frog at the big box stores. So it's actualy easier to get in my area.

So thanks for all the help.

Happy Frog out of the bag also works great as a buffer soil between the concentrate and transplant.

Good advice I think! Cause mixing up those small amounts was always kinda something I was thinking about and it makes sense to mix the small amounts first and work it into soil.....Instead of doing opposite or something else and mix that in.

Not sure about where you can learn about soil mixes but researching RIU using google, and whatever you type always type rollitup after and it works way better than using RIU search engine.

Ok, I got the BG Seedling mix and mixed 1/2 bag into my SS mix. I started with one bag of FF OF, with all the additions, it's now two bags worth (about 20ga ). The Seedling Mix is very light stuff. I guess that was the point of the LW.

Subcool says that LW + OF makes a 'balanced mix'. Anyone know what that means?

Thanks, all

foxfarm o.f has the wrong nutrient ratios for cannabis. combining it with light warrior balances the nutrient profile to something more suitable to cannabis.
