When you top, the plant grows more symmetrical, which will make it easier to fill the screen. Also , you wont need to worry much about the stiffness of the main stem. However, toping will create stress and slow down the growth rate.
Anyway, you can easily scrog without topping.

I'm sure you would have to top to scrog some people top as many as 5 times depends how much time you are willing to put into it because to get a plant to scrog nicely it could take a couple months maybe longer but then it still depends you can't just scrog any plant certain strains are better to scrog then others

try to bend and grow it completely vertical. the new growth from the main branch, bend them vertical right away aswell. Short scrog net, but u got to bend the plant vertically. LST pretty much.

Personally I think there is no point scrogging yes you will get a monster plant but I can pull the same amount as you would from scrogging just by sticking the plants straight into flower after 3 weeks that way I maximise my harvest's every year because whereas you might be growing say 3 big plants in your tent I could stick 10 average size plants and pull the same weight and that way you can grow a variety instead of just a couple different strains

So basically what you are doing is SOG right? But some strains aren´t good for that

Top - and you 'll have an easier time filling the screen , but longer time to veg
No top - and you have to work a lil more with training

Find a strain that is more indica dom. I'm currently doing a DWC scrog with WWXBB, and has been 3 month veg from seed, and has only covered 1sq/ft of scrog net. My scrog net is about 1x2ft maybe a bit bigger. This plant has suffered heaps of abuse, so thats why it took longer to veg maybe. I will flip them once I have the lower stems reach the scrog net. Most the the main branches are at the height of my scrog net, but I want the lower one to reach up too.
Having tried Soil, dwc and scrog..personally I would do a SOG setup in a flood&drain system. Love the growth rate in dwc, but it is a hassle. Like to keep the system, simple as possible.

Agree with you on that sog is better its simple and fast harvests I would show some pics of mine but I'm using my phone and it won't upload but there about 5 weeks in flower

3 plants there.
On two of the plants the main cola is a little larger than the rest of the buds but they are all pretty big.

im not doing sog to sell I only have a 1.2m x 1.2m x 2m tent I got 10 small it's just quicker harvests I don't have to wait aslong for my harvest and that way I can make it last till my next one

Yes you can scrog without topping but bending, super cropping and lst is highly recommended. I myself super crop and fim my plants and the only time I really top is when 1 plant is leading the race and I have to even the canopy and I use a double trellis here's some pics just 4 plants in the 4x4 tent and 8 plants in my 4x8 tent no topping but like I said I have to top the leader plant lol
