sq ft vs cu ft wattage

You will get a much better spread of light, full blast, at 20", than at half at 12"

on one board, i agree.

but if you are spreading the same wattage that you had on one board, instead across 2 boards that are physically spread apart more, how can that not be a better spread of light? maybe i am missing something.

Then why not increase both bds and have more coverage

Oh ya

Yer growing a 2' plant

Sure

If u want just 2' plants

Go for it

I like my 5' pulling 10oz each personally in my 4x4x7

my closet has shelfs in it that limit my hanging height to 5 ft. all good, i like shorter plants for the most part. i am hitting 1.5 gpw so not worried about how tall my plants are. shorter plants are easier for me to deal with at every stage. i don't care about plant counts so i just grow more small plants. with that said i accept a lot of people do worry about plant counts so I am going to do some scrog as well so that I can help out friends who are using that method. i think short tents will also work good for scrog.

diodes keep getting cheaper why not run more of them, have a shorter canopy, and then double the total grow space you can use by stacking 2 tents on racks?

to each their own.

i personally want @The Loafter to prove us both wrong and find out that wattage per CU ft is what matters lol.

The Gavita 1700e is 635w, and is made to replace a HID in a 4 x 4 on a 1:1 basis. 1700umol. Thats 100umol more than a 1000w Hortilux HPS, which is also made for a 4 x 4.

Thats 40w sq/ft. Not 30w.
A couple other LED produce similar results with 610w-650w.

good observation. ive always seen people recommend 30W/35max for latest gen lm301B/H. bumping up a bit if using older gen 561C/EB2/Vestas etc. but now that you point that out, even the HLG fixtures are 600ish watts. they say they cover a 5x5 but aren't most people using them in a 4x4?

I think some manufacturers over-rate their products. Gavita says 645w- 1700e- 1700umol covers a 4 x 4 is good enough for me. They did the research.

Gavita is 645w, my mistake. still 40.3w Sq/ft

HID/Hortilux HPS 1600umol is 62.5w sq/ft

assuming my 4lx4wx6 tent needs 480 watts (30 watts/ sq foot), would the same tent on its side - 6lx4wx4h still need just 480 watts

no it would need much more. assuming the lights are hung the same distance from the canopy and you want to light the canopy from corner to corner with an even PPFD it is the size of the canopy in sq. ft that matters.
