I just wanted to share this. I have sprouted many seeds over the years and attempted to
sprout many more. I tried this new method (cause the voices in my head told me to) with the last few batches of seeds Ive sprouted and I have had excellent results.
I take an old white cotton motel towel and cut it as wide as a gallon sized ziplock freezer bag and twice as long. I then boil the towel in water (well water)for about ten minutes.
I then remove the towel from the water with tongs and hold it up allowing it to drain and cool until it can be handled without burning me. I then fold the towel in half lengthwise
and place it in a gallon ziplock bag. I allow the towel to cool further until it's just warm to the touch and place the seeds on top of the towel and gently press them down a bit so they make good contact with the towel fibers. I then close the ziplock bag, making sure there is enough air in the bag to prevent the top from contacting the seeds. I then set the bag on top of the fridge and wait.
This method gave me 100% germination with seeds purchased from greenhouse.
It gave me about 80% on seeds that had been sitting in my desk for a couple years.
Some of the latter took 2 weeks to crack. I had zero mold, mildew or rot from this method. The same desk seeds yielded about 2% using tissue paper and mold and mildew where rampant.
I havn't seen anyone else describe this method so I figured I'd share it, for what it's worth.
Nothing I hate more than having seeds Ive stored for years rot when I try and germ them.
