Someone explain please....

Why is it that people say not to keep a humidity dome on seedlings once they sprout?

As far as I know seedlings need some humidity, how do you keep humidity levels without a dome? The only way I can get acceptable levels is with the dome on. Will my seedlings be stressed and become males and hermis cause my humidity is only 20%!

Thanks in advance,

I have sprouted seedlings with 20% humidity without a dome. I suppose it's a good idea to remove the dome so that all feeding comes from watering the roots. If a humidity dome is in place the plant won't have to focus on growing a root system because the foliage can absorb moisture.

its not a bad idea i spray my seedlings at first but when they look like they are getting strong i stop and let them develop a nice root system......hes not saying if you spray your plants they wont grow roots but foliar feeding all the times makes it harder for the plant to focus on its roots because it doesn't need to

As allready stated when the plant is getting the moisture it needs from its leaves the root growth slows, roots grow best when they are forced to search out water.

The only time i mist clones or seedlings is if they look like they are struggeling & my clones grow much faster.

Ok...I understand that whole issue, but if seedlings grow best in 40-50% Rh, what about a humudity dome is bad for them?

Do I make sense? Say you had 1 grow room with seedlings in pots, w/no humidity dome, and the room had 50%RH,whats the difference between that and a room with a humidity dome over a tray at 50% Rh?

Air flow, I believe.Seedlings are also very susceptible to damping off disease, a fungus.

The difference would be the air flow wouldn't you think. Seedling may grow better with humidity but they need air also a dome on too long can sometimes cause more problems.

if the dome was on i would think it would be hard to keep at 50%rh i think it would be much higher.

I havent tried yet cause everyone tells me not to. It has many holes on top of it to let air excape, and its about 7" tall.

keep it closed and open it a few times a day...Spray occassionally to maintain moisture.
24 hours of light for 2 weeks.imo

what i would do is try it...if it works fine...if not at least you will know.

i'm always trying something...thats what makes growing interesting

if somethings not working you learn from your mistakes

if you ask advice...take it...and always say thanks...even if you do not use it.

If my research is correct, higher levels of RH during seedling growth aids in the photosynthesis. Seedlings have already set root, so they are looking to grow with some vigor while at the same time continually to expand on it's current root growth. With the case of clones. We aren't looking for the cutting to spend it's energy on growing bigger. We want it to get some roots established. I believe the reasons for also wanting to have higher levels of RG during cloning is to prevent too much transpiration from the leaves. It has the energy stored in the branch and fans while being attached to the mom.

I'm still new to this, and like I have said, this is my knowledge based on my research. I hope this gets you going on clearing some things up or getting pointed into the right direction until a leading authority on here can correct me.
Good luck.
