Some questions for experienced growers

Hey all,

I'm doing some research on whether or not to move forward with a new startup idea. I want to understand if there's a need for the product and have some questions for experienced home growers.
  • why did you get into growing?
  • how long have you been growing?
  • what's been your biggest problem/challenge, if any?
  • what tools do you use & how did you find out about them?
  • do you consider growing well to be challenging or is a basic setup & minimal effort sufficient?
  • are you always looking to improve your grow? or do you only look into it when there's a problem.
  • how much money & hours per week do you devote to growing?
  • how "sophisticated" a grower do you consider yourself? Which elements do you monitor: light, temperature, humidity, pH, soil moisture, oxygen, irrigation flow, carbon dioxide, salinity, conductivity, anemometry (wind), pressure, pulley suspension, chloride, fluid drip rates?

Definitely not. The startup's aimed at people who are doing it legally, so please only answer if you're doing it somewhere where it's legal and the home grow is legit. Not interested in your answers otherwise.

Why is it when a person tips a container filled with water the water spills to the ground? Why does the sun come up in the east and go down in the west? Why is the sky blue? Why did Col Saunders drive around with his chicken recipe in his car? How many leaves does the average plant have? How come a big metal boat will float when we all know steel can't float?

I got into growing because the weed here is expensive as fuck, im talking 100 dollars for a bag, 3grams. And its not even high quality shit either. Also because my father grows. I been growing since last august.
My biggest challenge is keeping the temps and humidity at optimal range, outside temps really affect inside. Im located in Barrow, alaska, been legal under state law before ballot measure 2 was accepted.
Only tools i need and have are my hands. Lol. Mostly i only use a syringe to measure my nutrients properly without guessing, it came with my nutrients.
Growing well for me is simple, mainly because my father taught me everything, and did a little homework myself. Once i have my tent's dialed in with the proper speed on the inline fan and light properly distanced from my canopy, than its on cruise control and all i need to do is just feed the girls twice a week and rotate half a turn.
I only look into it when a problem occurs or starts and catch it early.
Growing is done daily, i mainly just check up on the ladies and gents when i make my own seeds.
I guess you can call complicated if you're new to the hobby of growing. I dont worry about ph, cause the nutrients does that itself and saves me alot of time really, i do have great lighting(300w led), temps i keep an eye on and keep them at 73-79F, soil moisture i check so i know when to water or know how many days it will be until they are ready for feeding(pretty accurate too), oxygen is an easy one, its everywhere, carbon dioxide..my girls get my breath and thats all they get, i dont believe co2 really helps unless your set up is completely sealed and has to be for it to be working as it should, im in the tent about a 1/4 of the day everyday so thats not an issue for me, salinity levels are not an issue for me either, i use purified water, ro water would be great but our water is basically pure coming from the power plant in town, basically im using pure pure water that reads 50ppm on my tds meter, i have an inline fan in the tent to pull air in from the bottom, its on the lowest setting cause i use led lights, my plants love it, they dont dry out too fast nor stay too moist on the top layer of soil, so all in all it is even pressure, not positive nor negative, i use rope ratchets to hang everything up, works great so far, no issues. Uhm, chloride, i dont really get much of that either if you mean sodium chloride, but the waters pretty pure and i just leave the caps off on the water jugs to let it evaporate out of the water, works great too. I just let it sit out for a day or two til the bubbles are gone, which is a good way to dechlorinating your water if you have "hard water" but we dont have that here, but its not as bad the lower 48.
