Some newbie questions regarding 1000w HPS and grow tent.

I'm just starting out with my first grow. I have a grow tent that's 54"x54" and 8' tall. I'm currently using t5's but I'm thinking about getting a 1000w HPS light system. I'm thinking about the SunLight Blockbuster 6" air cooled reflector.

I have a few questions:

Would that light be over-kill for that size tent?

What happens if the exhaust fan fails? How hot would it get inside the tent (room temperature varies from 60 to 80 degrees trough out the year)? Is there a fire hazard if the fan fails?

Hi GeneralTso,

I have a 60x60x80 grow tent (Secret Jardin 150), and have a 1,000 watt MH/HPS lighting system, aircooled w/ 6in inline fan + a 4 in fan pulling air through a ProFilter Carbon filter.

I answered your questions in bold...

Would that light be over-kill for that size tent?
Absolutely not. I have great light coverage and if you ensure that you're implementing good light distance from your plant, you're perfectly fine.

When I first started this was my #1 concern as I live in a Condo building in a densely populated urban environment so this was huge. Honestly, as long as you have your fan pushing air through your light, you should be fine. Today it was 70+ outside and humid and my tent was at a steady 83-84.5 degrees, and night temps around 65-70 degrees. In regards to fire, I'm new to this myself and have only 1 harvest under my belt but rest assured, so long you make sure your chords are off the floor, ballast in a secure place and nowhere near water...You should be good. But I prefer someone much more seasoned to give you more advice on fire prevention.

Good luck in your growing...It's a constant learning process but it's not rocket science. Just keep reading on here because I can tell you, it helped me greatly!

Thanks for the reply JohnGotti. That answers most of my questions. Hopefully somebody will come along and let me know what happens when an exhaust fan fails.

Anytime my friend! To add to my reply, my tent once got up to 97F and everything was fine. In the winter I never put my fan on. So unless you disappear for a few days at a time, you should be fine.

I run a 1k in a 2.5'x2.5' tent... Not overkill. If your fans stop working, no matter what size HID your running, your fucked....might as well make it official. If you are really all that concerned about a fire they make automatic extinguisher units to hang in your tent. Personally I would like to think I could contain a fire if I was at home at the time (Have extinguishers on hand) and if Im not home, I really dont like the neighbors that much anyway...been meaning to do something bout that dog for years:)-S0uP
